Mr., Mrs. Chajes' Work
Praised in Cleveland

Unprecedented acclaim was
given last week by the unanimous
decision of music critics of Cleve-
land's three daily newspapers—
Press, News and Plain Dealer—
to the directing of Julius Chajes
of the Cleveland's Jewish Sing-
ing. Society's 49th annual concert
and the singing of the soloist at
the concert, Margarite .Kozenn.
Severance Hall was filled to ca-
pacity by the enthusiastic concert
audience.
The Press critic wrote that
"Miss Kozenn's voice was very
agreeable."
The Plain Dealer's writer said
that musically, educationally and
religiously the concert was a
great experience. Of Miss Kozenn
(Mrs. Chajes) he wrote that "her
high tones were expressive of
beauty and power, and her sing-
ing was a welcome highlight of
the evening. The News' writer
similarly praised her singing as
revealing warmth.. -
"An inspiring feature of the
program," wrote the News' critic,
Elmore Bacon, "was the per-
formance of the Chajes 'Hymn of
Freedom,' a stirring march in-
spired by the present efforts to
form a Palestinian state."
