lo Defense of the Sword of Gideon and David and Maccabeus
In the recent debate on the "Palestine Bill" in the British House
of Commons, Mr. Seymour Cocks, Member of Parliament for Brox-
towe, made a most significant declaration in which he expressed
his inclination "to the defense of the sword" in considering the
trying Jewish position. There were numerous significant declara-
tions on the subject, but Mr. Cocks' is so impressive that we quote
it herewith:
The passing of this Bill, though very necessary, is a sad and mel-
ancholy affair. For 25 years members of all parties and the leaders
of all parties have supported His Majesty's jurisdiction in Palestine for
.the purpose, amongst other things, of establishing the Jewish National'
Home. The members of my own party—the Labour Party—have been
pledged up to the hilt to that cause. In fact, nearly every member of
the present Government who has been in the party for some years
has been personally pledged to the Zionist cause. One of those who
was pledged most deeply is the right hon. gentleman, the Secretary
of State for the Colonies, who, in a very - eloquent speech, moved a
resolution, at a Labour Party conference, and said that he felt it
would be a great day if such an experiment could be brought toa
a successful end. Altogether, resolutions in favour of the establish-
ment of a Jewish national home have been passed by eleven annual
conferences of the Labour Party. In December, 1944, in London, not
seven months before the General Election, a declaration urging the
Unrestricted immigration of the Jews was moved by the Prime Minister
himself, and carried . . •
It is, perhaps, a little late to appeal to the honour of our country.
Uertain people take Falstaff's view of honour. Falsaff said:
"What is honour? A word , • . Who hath
it? He that died o'Wednesday .
There-
fore, I'll none of it."
•
. . . But some of us who do not take Falstaff's view think that
there is lasting shame inflicted on the honour of our land.
So far as the Jews are concerned, they will cease to put their
trust in the pledges of Secretaries of State. or even in the resolu-
tions of United Nations. One betomes more and more inclined to the
defence of the sword; the sword of Gideon and David, and Judas
olaccabeus. If it comes to that, I hope they will hold their own in
their struggle with the Arab sheiks and the ex-Mufti. I hope they
will establish a strong and flourishing State in which Jewish and
Arab workers will prosper side by side in that ancient land which has
long been a subject of the world's debate.
The moderate elements in Jewry had hoped that the need for
armed defense would be averted. Men like Dr. Chaim Weizmann
consistently opposed the use of force , in achieving our aims. But
even Dr. Weizmann was - compelled to warn Mr. Warren Austin,
the U. S. spokesman at the UN, that Jews will fight to a finish for
independence: We shall never be able to forgive those who forced
us into a position of militarism. Spokesmen for the U. S. are as
guilty as the British and the Arabs. They have written a shameful
chapter in our and world history.
The peaceful approach was doomed by stupid "international
statesmen." Now, Jews everywhere—except the few hundred ihud-
ists—are forced to believe that perhaps, after all. force counts in the
world; perhaps only acquisition of Haifa, Jerusalem, Tiberias
by force will assure a Jewish State. Time will tell—and the show-
down is due in a few days.

The words of an eminent Jewish leader deserve quotation at this
point.
Leib Jaffe, poet and leader, head of the Keren Hayesod in
Jerusalem who died in the blast of the Jewish Agency Building,
wrote a poem 30 years ago admitting the difficulties in the path
of the builders of Zion and affirming faith in the ultimate results.
Here is the poem in translation by A. M.
We are a generation, heaven-doomed,
To seek, to burn to bow, to bend—
Yet never reach our end:
Ours is a land in which the very stones
Are moistened with the marrow of our bones,
Where youth and nature hold eternal feud,
-And where the rocks are with rich blood bedewed.
For he who dwelt here, and who breathed here
Never thereafter, with satiety
Was happy, nor with the smug placid mood.
Here hearts are laden with tempestuous ache,
Here strength is of a sacrificial worth,
So that both soul and body a firm union make
Without our parched earth.

The DiplOmatic Curtain
While the United Nations is in session, the U.S. Government
is conducting behind-the-scenes talks with Jewish and Arab leaders
in Washington in the hopes of inducing them to agree to trusteeship
. .. Former Governor Herbert Lehman was asked by high Washing-
ton officials to act as mediator between the U.S. Government and the
Jewish Agency, but he declined politely .. . All he did was to urge
Dr. Chaim Weizmann- to remain in the U. S. during the special Pales-
tine session of the General Assembly . . . Dr. Weizmann has since
been visited not only by U. S. delegate Warren Austin, but also' by
Arthur Creech-Jones, head of the British delegation to the UN, . and
by the French delegate, Alexandre Parodi . . . Seeking Jewish sup-
port for its trusteeship plan, the State Department summoned lead-
ers of an important American Jewish organization and suggested
that its president take upon himself the role of a negotiator between
Washington and Jerusalem ... Leaders of this organization are not
inclined to serve as mediators unless the U. S. tells them exactly how
trusteeship will be enforced and why it can be enforced easier than
partition . . They also want clearer commitments on the immigra-
tion question . . . High officials in the State Department are definite-
ly of the opinion that an understanding can be reached with the
moderate elements in the Jewish Agency - . . . They do not consider
David Ben Gurioh a "moderate."

Palestine Security
The Jewish Agency is concerned that King Abdullah. of Trans-
jordan may send his troops into Palestine after May 15 . . . because
.Transjordan is not a member of the United Nations and is under no
international obligation to abstain from invading Palestine . • . The
Arab Legion of Transjordan is the best organized military force in
the Middle East . . . It is true that the Legion is led by British
officers, but Britain can always say that the Legion takes orders
from its King and not from the British commanders . .. Especially
since Britain is definitely interested in increasing Transjordan's con-
trol over certain sections of Palestine • . . Territory in Palestine con-
trolled by Transjordan forces will actually be controlled by Britain,
not only because the Legion is British-led . . . It is no secret that
the King of Transjordan is nothing but a British puppet and that
Britain wants Transjordan to annex the Negev because of oil
potentialities there . . . Under the military pact between Britain
and Transjordan, the British government is to provide arms and
ammunition for Transjordan . . . Hence, a situation may develop in
which Britain may supply military aid to Transjordan for an in-
vasion into Palestine.

Welcome Habimah
No better propaganda for the Jews of Palestine could be per-
formed than the bringing of the Habimah Theatre to the United
States for a limited engagement . . • It is exactly 22 years since the
Habimah performed in this country last, enjoying a success similar
to that of the Moscow Art Theater, which is considered the best in
the world . . . This, despite the fact that the Habimah performances
were presented in Hebrew, a language little understood by Jews in
America and entirely alien to American non-Jewish theater-goers .. .
Now that Palestine is in the midst of civil war, the American public
will see something "made in Palestine"—which is very far from
bloodshed and politics . . . And it will also be new for Americans
to find that the Habimah is the only theater group in the world
which observes the Sabbath by not performing on Friday evenings
and Saturday matinees . . . This tradition will be maintained during
all performances in the United States, notwithstanding the financial
losses involved. .. New for many Americans will also be the fact
that the Habimah plays on a "no-star" system . . . This is because
practically all of the players are "stars" and interchange roles from
time to time.
