NEW YORK, (JTA)—Asserting
that the celebration of Passover
this year is the prelude to the
establishment of what will
become an "heroic and noble
Judea," Rabbi Stephen S. Wise'
told an assembled 5,000 guests at
the 16th annual "Third Seder"
of the National CoMinittee for
Labor Palestine that the Jews
"are on the march." He hailed
the coming establishment of the
Jewish state as the fulfillment of
the age-old dream of the Jewish
people for national independence.

Given Motors Displays
New Mercury Models

The all-new 1949 Mercury is
now on display at Given Motors,
Inc., 8510 12th St., at Philadel-
phia.
Described by Benson Ford, vice
president of the Ford Motor Co.
and director of Lincoln-Mercury,
as "the most significant cars in
Mercury histery," the - new
models combine grace and beauty
with new interior styling, an all-
new ride, increased power, im-
proved performance and more
room for passengers and luggage.
The new models are being
presented in four body styles: a
four-door sport sedan, a six-
passenger. convertible coupe and
a station wagon. Power by a 110
horsepower V8 engine, designed
exclusively for Mercury, the new
car is five feet two inches high.
Although the outside dimensicins
are only slightly greater than
preceding models, styling and
engineering provide more usable
space for passengers and luggage.
The front seat, for example, is
nearly eight inches wider.
Another imoprtant feature is
the new type, low-pressure super
balloon tiles provided as standard
equipment on all • Mercury
models.
Changing a rear tire has been
greatly simplified. A new rear
aide eliminates the hub and•per-
mits the wheel to be dropped
almost straight down instead of
out and down. The wheel is fast-
ened to the flanged axle end.
"We believe the • styling motif
of the new Mercury will estab-
lish a new trend in motor car
design," Ford said. "We also be-
lieve the public, while desiring
the last word in styling, wants
to be comfortable. The new Mer-
cury satisfies both wants."

Italians 'Convert'
Selves to Judaism

The latest edition of Commen-.
tary magazine carries the story
of a "new and strange addition
to the House of Israel," a colony
of self-declared Jews at San
Nicandro Garganico, Italy.
Fritz Becker, author of the
article, tells how 63-year-old
Danto Manduzio, an illiterate
peasant bedridden for 27 years,
taught himself to read and, after
exploring all religions, finally
adopted Judaism. The "convert"
won over 80 persons to his new
faith.
Today, Becker says, • some of
the San Nicandro families are
half Jewish, half Catholic. Many
of the new Jewish youths are
attending agricultural training
camps to fit themselves for the
"Land of Their Fathers" —
Palestine.
