NEW YORK—In the face of
all difficulties, the Jews of Pal-
estine "are determined to make
available a home and a haven for
hundreds of thousands of home-
less European Jewish survivors,"
Col. Harry D. Henshel, vice
president of the Bulova Watch
Company and a national chair-
man of the Jewelry Division of
the $250,000,000 United Jewish
Appeal campaign, who has just
returned from a first-hand study
of Jewish needs in Palestine, re-
ported to officers of the UJA.
Colonel Henshel, formerly air
movements officer on the combat
staff of General Omar Bradley
reported that "despite all the
shooting, Palestine life is pretty
much normal. I visited a recep-
tion center for new arrivals from
Cyprus and found them healthy,
happy and well fed.
"The big problem is housing.
As soon as homes are available
the newcomers are quickly as-
signed work either in the indus-
trial centers in the Haifa and Tel
Aviv areas or in farm settle-
ments. In one settlement I visited
in the Petach Tikvah vicinity, 170
of the 800 colonists had arrived
from Cyprus in the past two
months."

Jews in Jerusalem are shown here waiting for the arrival of a
200-truck food convoy from the all-Jewish city of Tel Aviv.
More Jewish families were
settled on farms in the United
States during 1947 than in any
of five previous years, according
to the 48th annual report of the
Jewish Agricultural Society, just
released by its executive head,
Dr. Gabriel Davidson.
The report deals with the
society's work to strengthen and
enlarge the American Jewish
farm class, and of the efforts put
forth by the Society to establish
on farms veterans, refugees, dis-
placed workers, white collar men
and others who see in farming a
desirable means of livelihood.
The report discloses that the
Society has granted upwards of
$11,000,000 in loans to Jewish far-
mers in 40 states since the
Society's founding in 1900; that it
has secured farm employment for
20,160 Jewish young men since
the setting up of its -Farm Em-
ployment Department in 1908;
that during the past ten years
more than 10,000 people sought
its settlement guidance and that
the Society was directly instru-
mental in establishing on farms
1,136 families and indirectly
many more.
In 1947, 106 families out of the
952 families who sought settle-
ment advice were established on
farms in California, Connecticut,
Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan,
New Jersey, New York and Ohio.
"Through the Society's construc-
tive practices," Dr. Davidson says ,
Jewish farm seekers have been
settled in a manner to avoid pit-
falls and disappointments, to
assure them of a fair chance to
become rooted."
