Pesach-5708-1948

BY RABBI MOSES FISCHER

The author of the book of Kings
describes the Passover in the days
of Hezekia—which was a period
of spiritual and moral regenera-
tion for Israel—with the words:
"that since the days of the Judges
and Kings the Passover was never
observed as wholeheartedly and
as devotedly as in the days of
King Hezakia."
The historian of later days,
looking back at the Passover of
our days, will surely say: "that
since 2000 years, since it hai lost
its homeland, Israel has never
celebrated the Pesach-feast with
such an awakening of the soul,
such elevated spirit as in the
year 5708-1948."
The frail and faltering wish
"Next Year in Jerusalem" be-
came at this Pesach a mighty
driving force dominating the
whole being of the Jew and turn-
ing all loyal Jewish hearth not
merely with mumbling words and
lip-service—but with deepest pro-
foundest prayers, with sacrificial
deeds, with holy pride and noble
admiration to Jerusalem.
The first note in our Seder-
Service is the extension of an in
vitation to those "who are in
need and plight" to celebrate
with us the Passover. This year
it behooves the head of every
Jewish home to extend with
humble reverence an invitation
for the spiritual presence of the
Warriors of God—perhaps in con-
junction with the spirit of the
Prophet Eiahu—to our tables, in-
to our homes, in order that gaz-
ing upon their heroic noble fig-
ures, contemplating their glori-
ous achievements , evaluating
their unutterable sacrifices — we
learn to emulate their glorious
example and bring in our own
small way our- sacrifices with
joyous generous hearts on the al-
tar of Jewish Brotherhood and
Love; in the shape of our mone-
tary gifts and contributions to
the Allied Jewish Campaign.
If I would possess eclesiatical
powers I would ordain that if we
read in our Hagadah the passage
"whoever does not say the three
things on Pesach-eve: Pesach Mat-
zo and Moror has not fufilled his
duty," we shall add to it as ex-
pression of the great duty of this
year of Destiny that whosoever
does not contribute this year
wholeheartedly and lavishly to
to the A.J.C, to the Redemption,
Reconstruction and Preservation
of Israel—has not fulfilled his
duty to God and Israel, to our
Religion and Nation, but has the
same time proved himself to be a
very poor type of a Jew.
May I quote from Maimonides
"We celebrate, the Yom Toy by
doing good to our body, partak-
ing of the best food and drinks
we may allow ourselves, but we
are obliged at the same time to

provide for the orphan and widow
that they enjoy also the holiday.
But whoever is satisfied that his
famiy enjoy the Yom Tov, eat
and drink richly, but he locks
the door of his house before the
needy and dependent and does
not concern himself about those
who are of sore and bitter heart—
his joy is not the spiritual joy of
a Yom Tov but it is the joy and
satisfaction of his belly alone!"

to the United States, as a re-

now going on in Palestine to de-

age or injury. Other bullets
struck the outside walls.

Seventy-three years ago, there was a single Sanders store in
Detroit. With the opening of our second Dearborn store early
in April, there will be twenty-two Saunders stores to serve
Detroit and outlying communities.
This growth has been possible chiefly because the course laid
down by Grandfather Fred Sanders for that first store still
guides the conduct of the organization. His policy was plain-
spoken, but sound : to make only the highest quality of prod-
ucts, and to sell them at reasonable prices.
Because Sanders have held steadfastly to that policy, every
Sanders store is a busy store, standing high in the confidence
and respect of its community. And because we prize the con-
fidence and respect of Detroit, you can be sure that every
Sanders product you buy will be as delicious and wholesome
as it can be made.
