94,000 Jews Live
In Poland Today,
Survey Reveals

WARSAW. (JTA)—There are
94,000 Jews in Poland today, it
was revealed in a survey made
by the Central Jewish Committee.
Nearly half of them, or 44,000,
are concentrated 'in Lower Sile-
sia.
Of Poland's total Jewish popu-
lation, about 7,000 are between
the ages of 16 and 25, while chil-
dren under 16 number approxim-
ately 12,000. The report attributes
the decreasing Jewish population
to the continuous emigration of
Jews.
Close to 34,000 Jews are gain-
fully employed. Nearly 20 per cent
of them are self-employed in
small workshops, while 12 per
cent are salaried workers, 10 per
cent are employed by social in-
stitutions and a little more than
eight per cent are engaged by
business firms. Fields in which
Jews are employed include tex-
tile manufacturing, metal works,
coal mining and agriculture.
Nearly half of the 7,000 Jewish
youths in Poland are studying in
high schools and colleges, while
about 1,000 attend trade schools.
Although the Jewish population
of Poland is .04 per cent of the
total, 2 per cent of the country's
students are Jewish.
There are approximately 35
Yiddish schools with an enroll-
ment of more than 3,000 students
while the country's 13 Hebrew
schools are attended by 1,000 pu-
pils. Of all these schools, about
13 will be closed down this year
because of insufficient enrollment.
Eleven children's homes pro-
vide full-time care to 773 chil-
dren, while 56 other institutions
afford partial assistance to 3,300
youngsters. Nearly 6,000 Jewish
children receive some form of
public assistance. One-third of
all the Jewish children are either
full or half-orphans.

Fancy Tale About Abram

150,000 Vets Protest Reversal

Great Novel Views
`One God' Theme

"Abram Son of Terah" by
Florence Marvyne. Bauer (Bobbs-
Merrill Co., Indianapolis) is a
magnificent tale about the man
who rejected the idols thdt were
worshipped in his day acid found
the One God.
There is nothing in the entire
story to indicate that the hero
of the splendidly written book
was the father of the Jewish
people. FAA the author has woven
so fascinating a story about the
people in the city. of Ur on the
Euphrates that as a novel it will
rank among the very best of our
time.
Abram's boyhood amidst fam-
ily feuds, business intrigues and
attempts by the "priests" to dom-
inate the people prove revealing

Among the 150,000 Jewish War Veterans and sympathizers
taking part in a New York parade and outdoor demonstration, this
group carries a banner protesting the reversal of U. S. policy on
Palestine. It reads: "We fought For Peace—Not Arab Appeasement."
Other placards carried such slogans as "Oil or Honor" and "Jewish
State Reborn—May 16."

and lead up to the rejection of
idolatry by our hero.
Tributes exacted by grasping
priests, the bribes to which peo-
ple resorted, the intensity of feel-
ing among the people are ana-
lyzed by a master writer.
In addition, the love story of
Abram and Sarai is so well re-
lated. that it holds the reader's
interest.
"Abram Son of Terah" is a
very good story, exceptionally
well told. The lessons about the
One God which Abram learns
from his Amorite slave Eber
should be listed among great
theological analyses. It is a great
book, with a great story, and a
great moral. Don't fail to read it.
