Year Book Views Issue of Rome Jews Beaten
Church, State, Education By 200 Fascists

This is a belated review of the 5708 Year Book,
published by the Jewish Publication Society of
America in cooperation with the American Jewish
Committee. But the contents are even more im-
porta.nt at this time, in view of the discussion of
the separation of church and state in the leading
article, under the title "Church, State and Educa-
tion," by Nathan Schachner.
Mr. Schachner's significantly analytical essay
and its appeal against the abandonment,. of the
principles of Americanism separating church and
state, come at an opportune time, in view of the
8-to-1 U. S. Supreme Court decision against the
"released time" plan in the Champaign, Ill., case.
The Year Book has special articles on Prof.
Morris Cohen, Sidney Hillman, Henry Monsky,
Emanuel Libman and the Jewish Institute of Re-
ligion. There are the usual reviews of the year in
the fields of communal welfare, religion, educa-
tion, cultural activities, inter-group relations,
refugees and Zionism; and reviews of the most
important events of the past year.
Directories of Jewish newspapers, communal
organizations and Jews in public service; calen-
dars, statistics and the annual report of the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee are among the features of
the book.
Federations and Councils in Michigan are listed
for the following communities: Battle Creek, Bay
City, Benton Harbor, Detroit, Flint, Grand 'Rapids,
Jackson, Lansing, Muskegon, Pontiac, Saginaw

Proposal To Ban Zionist
Fund-Raising in Canada
OTTAWA, (J T A) — Norman
Jacques, anti-Semitic member of
the Federal Parliament, has
asked the Canadian Government
to consider the advisability of
banning the solicitation of funds
in Canada for the purpose of
"supplying Zionists in Palestine
with arms and ammunition."
Jacques said he raised this
question in view "of the latest,
cold-blooded murder" of British
troops in Palestine. Minister for
External Affairs St. Laurent told
him he would study the question
and reply to it shortly.

ROME — (JTA) — Police pa-
trolled Rome's ancient Jewish
Ghetto quarter following a riot
when some 200 fascists invaded
the area and began beating up
Jews.
The fascists, members of the
Italian Social Movement Party,
marched into the quarter sing-
ing fascist songs and shouting:
"Death to the Jews." When the
Jewish inhabitants, including
many women and children who
were in the streets at the time,
booed the fascists they started
swinging rubber truncheons.
Police arrived on the scene
after four persons were injured
seriously, and drove the dem-
onstrators out of the district.
Before the arrival of the police,
however, the fascists succeeded
in desecrating a monument to
the thousands of Italian Jews
massacred by the Nazi occupa-
tion army during the war.
A large demonstration protest-

ing the fascist attack was staged
in the Rome synagogue the eve,
ning. of the attack.
Earlier, under-secretary for in-
ternal affairs Achile Matazza ex-
pressed the Italian Government's
regret over the incident to Dr.
Raffaele Cantoni, president of the
Union of Italian-Jewish Com-
munities, and voiced the govern-
ment's determination to prevent
its repetition. Meanwhile, strong
forces of police stood guard in
the Jewish quarter to head off
any possible recurrence of the
raid.
