Admit 400,000 DPs, Eliminate
Discrimination, Clergymen Urge
Six Prominent Michigan Protestant Leaders Address Urgent

Appeal in Behalf of Catholics and Jews to
Senators Vandenberg and Ferguson

Six prominent Protestant cler-
gymen, in a joint letter to Sena-
tors Arthur H. Vandenberg and
Homer Ferguson, deplored the
discriminatory aspects of the
bill, for the admission of DPs to
the U. S. as reported out of the
Senate Judiciary Committee and
urged adoption of a measure
that would increase the number
to be admitted to 400,000.
The clergymen who joined in
writing the letter are: Dr. Edgar
DeWitt Jones, past president,
Federal Council of Churches of
Christ in America; Dr. Henry
Hitt Crane, pastor, Central Meth-
odist Church; The Rev. Herbert
Beecher Hudnut, pastor, Wood-
ward Ave. Presbyterian Church;
The Rt. Rev. Lewis Bliss Whitte-
more, Bishop of Western Michi-
gan; The Rev. Irwin C. Johnson,
Rector, St. John's Episcopal
Church, and the Rev. Vincent I.
Gruhn, president, Pastoral As-
sociation of the Detroit Churches
of the Nation41 Lutheran Coun-
cil.
Their letter to Senators Van-
denberg and Ferguson follows:

"As Protestant clergymen who are
greatly concerned about the displaced
persons still in camps in Europe three
years after V-E Day, we welcome the
fact that a bill on their behalf, S.
2242, has been reported by the Senate
Judiciary Committee and is now on
the Senate consent calendar.
"However, we deplore those dis-
criminatory provisions of . the bill
which would exclude large groups of
Catholics and Jews. The preference
given nationals of the Baltic coun-
tries and only those Poles east of the
Curzon line is such a provision; so

Cancer Society Devotes
Building to Research
And Relief of Suffering

Formal dedication of the new
Cancer Society Building, at John
R and Hanock, took place
Wednesday. The two-story fa-
cilities will be devoted to the
cause of seeking a cure for the
dread disease and of easing the
suffering of those who already
have it.
The Detroit Institute of Can-
cer Research occupies the entire
second floor. The executive of-
fices of the Southeastern Michi-
gan Division of the Cancer So-
ciety and headquarters for the
educational and patients' aid
services occupy the group floor.
A spacious workroom for vol-
unteers making cancer dressings
and other aids has been in opera-
tion for some time. -Many Jew-
ish women's organizations par-
ticipate in this work, which in-
volves making cancer dressings
and bedwear which are furnished

also is the establishment of the date
December 22, 1945 as the last date of
registration for displaced persons.
This date excludes the survivors of
the 1946 pogroms in Pdland, Hungary
and Romania, who sought refuge in
the displaced persons camps in Ger-
many, Austria and Italy. We are
heartily in favor of the amendment
which you, Senator Ferguson, _and
others haVe proposed which would
extend the date to April 21, 1947.
"While we are understandably con-
cerned with displaced persons of the
Protestant faith, we protest against
any discrimination against others on
the basis of nationality or religion.
As Christians, we uphold the right
of all people to worship God accord-
ing to the dictates of their consci-
ence. As Americans, we uphold the
right of freedom of religion and the
belief that "all people are created
equal." We believe therefore that
displaced persons should be given op-
portunity on an equal basis and no
preferential treatment should be ac-
corded any group on the basis of reli-
gion or nationality.
"We further urge that the number
suggested in this bill be increased to
the number 400 000 as agreed upon
earlier as "our fair share. "
"In the name of humanity, we beg .
that speedy action be taken by the
Senate to correct these and other' de-
fects in the Wiley Bill, S. 2242, so
that these people who have suffered
so many tragedies and wild - long only
for an opportunity to become useful
and independent citizens may be giv-
en a chance to do so."
