Furmansky, Shomer Leader, Killed
In Zion Battle of Mishmar Ha-Emek

The report that Moshe Fur-
mansky, prominent Hashomer
Hatzair leader who had visited
Detroit on many occasions to ad-
dress public gatherings here,
was killed in the battle of Mish-
mar HaEmek in Palestine, inject-
ed a spirit of deep sorrow and
pain in the ranks of the Jewish
pioneer youth movement and
.among all Zionists who knew
and loved the able leader.
A statement issued by Hish-
orner Hatzair from national
headquarters, 3 0 5 Broadway,
New York, states:

"The name of Moshe Furmansky is
directly linked with Zionist educa-
tion of Jewish youth' in Poland and
America, and their participation as
pioneers in the upbuilding of Pales-
tine. Born in Poland in 1907, Fur-
mansky worked actively in the Hash-
omer Hatzair organization during its
early years. He grew up and devel-
oped in the ranks of the movement
and became one of its outstanding
leaders and educators. For many
years he occupied important posi-
tions within the organization and rep-
resented it ably and devotedly in
many sphers of Jewish activity in
Poland.

Britain Will Not

LONDON, (JTA)—The special

May 15, Foreign Secretary Ern-
est Bevin announced in • the
House of Commons.
Future relations between the
government and Zionist author-
ities, he said, will depend on the
course of events
in Palestine. He
added that he
.s unaware of
allegations made
by the Irgun
that non-Arabs

in Palestine.
The Colonial
Sevin office revealed
that British military experts
who examined Arab artillery
used in shelling Jerusalem have
ascertained that the weapons
are not of British make. At the
same time, a Colonial Office
spokesman categorically repud-
iated the charges made by the
UN Palestine Commission in its
report to the special session of
the General Assembly that Bri-
tain did not cooperate with the
Commission. -
The Archbishop of Canterbury,
addressing the British Council of
Churches, said that "the United
Nations has shown itself ex-
tremely dilatory and ineffective
in the whole of the dealings
with the problem of Palestine."
He urged the immediate ap-
pointment of a UN Governor-
General who would be respon-
sible for the peace and safety of
Jerusalem.

LONDON, (JTA) — The For-
eign Office disclosed that Sir
Hugh Dow, 62-year-old former
civil servant in India, has been
selected as British Minister to
Palestine, effective after the ter-
mination of the Mandate.

Hatzair collective settlement Mishmar
Haemek when it was settled in the
'20s. His 18 years of membership in
Mishmar Haemek were divided into
two periods of activity: the building
and development of Mishmar Haemek
and the education of Jewish youth
in America for life in Palestine.
"At the conclusion of hsi second
period of work in the United States,
Moshe Furmansky was forced to re-
main throughout the time of the sec-
ond world war. The results of his
work and creative spirit are evidenced
in the five American * collectives of
Hashomer Hatzalr, the many branch-
es of the movement throughout the
United States and Canada, and in the
imporant Jewish institutions in Amer-
ica in which he actively represented
his movement.
"Ten days ago, a contingent of 1,-
400 Arabs, armed with artillery and
mortars, intent on completely anni-
hiliating Mishmar Haemek and its
defenders, attacked the settlement.
After an extended battle the _build-
ers, defenders, and youths of Mishmar
Haemek assisted by special troops at
the Haganah, succeeding in routing
and dispersing the attackers - and
cleaning out their points- of concen-
tration. It was in this battle that Fur-
mansky fell.
"Hashomer Hatzair will never for-
get its elder comrade, educator, and
leader, Moshe Furmansky. His be-
loved personality will forever live in
the hearts of the builders of Ein Has-
hofet, Kfar Menachem, and i the four
young collectives of Hashomer Hat-
zair in America."

Swedish Representative
Claims Anti-Semitism
Will Be Outlawed There

NEW YORK — Anti-Semitism.
will be outlawed in Sweden this
year, Dr. Wilhelm Michaeli, Di-
rector of HIAS (Hebrew Immi-
grant Aid Society) in Stockholm,
reported on his arrival in the
U. S. for a series of eonferences
on immigration matters at •HIAS
world headquarters, 425 Lafay-
ette Street.
Dr. Michaeli, who was accom-
panied by David Kopniewsky,
managing director of the Stock-
holm Jewish Community, said
that although Swedish police
have traced the editor of the 'An-
ti-Semitic pamphlets which were
sent from Stockholm to the Uni-
ted States, they apparently have
not established the financial
source ofdsupport for these activ-
ities. Mr. Kopniewsky said the
police asked the cooperation of
the Jewish Community in an ef-
fort to ascertain who was behind
the anti-Semitic editor.
The Swedish government has

On this Festival of Freedom we must think in
terms not only of our own privileges as Americans,
but also of those who continue to languish in
Displaced Persons camps and who look to-us for
succor.

May the Festival of
Freedom bring us closer
to peace for Israel and
the entire world, victory
for the Fighters for
Freedom in_ Palestine, an
end to Jewish homeless-
ness and the realization
of the hope for the re-
creation of the Jewish
State.

We can never be completely free unless our
fellow-Jews throughout the world are free.

Our minds can not be fully attuned , to liberty
unless the men and women who are fighting to
'defend our citadels in Palestine have our bless-
ings and help.

We must share fully in the great effort to
'rescue the European survivors from Nazism and
to make real their dream to find a permanent
home in Eretz Israel.

For the sake of true freedom for all of us, let
us dedicate ourselves untiringly on this Passover
to make a total success of the 1948 Allied Jewish
