Detroit Lawyers Participate
In National Caravan to UN

A delegation of Detroit law-
yers is among the caravan of the
National Lawyers' Guild which
is meeting today with Warren
Austin, U. S. delegate to the
United Nations, and Dr. Jose
Arce, president of the UN Gen-
eral Assembly, to urge that jus-
tice be achieved in Palestine by
implementation of the partition
plan.
The Lawyers' Guild delegation,
including Jewish and non-Jew-
' ish attorneys from the entire
country, is being led by Bartley
C. Crum, author of "Behind the
Silken Curtain," a noted friend
of the Zionist cause. Paul O'Dwy-
er, brother of New 'York City's

mayor, will. lead the New York
group.
Among the Detroiters present
will be Harold M. Silverston,
Jules S. Stoorman and Sol Blum-
rosen. Several others also were
expected to join the caravan.
The Detroit delegates were
chosen .at a meeting of the • De-
troit Guild held last Thursday,
at which Judge Frank Fitzgerald
presided and Ned Smokier re-
ported on the national executive
committee's stand favoring par-
tition of Palestine. Rabbi Joseph
Miller, a member of the Illinois
bar and midwest director of the
Labor Zionist Organization of
America, addressed the meeting.

An Appeal for Speedy Action

By MAURICE ARONSSON

General Chairman, 1948 Allied Jewish Campaign

This is a Year of Destiny—and of Challenge.
Neither can be long delayed.
Neither permits delay or procrastination.
We have been at work for more than three weeks, solicit-
ing funds towards our $6,200,000 goal. The response, in the
main, has been good, and we are encouraged.
When, however, we speak with satisfaction of the good
up-to-the-minute results, we speak of the attainments thus
far.
In the meantime, there are a few slow . processes which
must be speeded up.
Some people are hesitant in deciding on the amounts of
their giving, and some of our workers are slow in covering
some of their prespects.
I am therefore impelled to make this appeal to the work-
ers and to the entire community:
We can not afford to lag behind in our efforts! The need
is urgent and the job is big.
Detroit Jews MUST give the maximum—and they must
make up their minds to contribute liberally.
It is my personal desire and determination to complete
the solicitation of larger gifts, in the pre-campaign, THIS
MONTH. If April is truly to be recorded as our MONTH OF
FREEDOM, we must fulfill this aim. To contribute to the
many worthy causes is a privilege—so act now.
And we must proceed immediately to secure all other
available pledges as quickly as possible.
Time is of the essence. I appeal to all Detroit Jewry to act
at once! Let us make this Destiny Campaign an effort of great
honor to ourselves and a signal for assured defense and sur-
vival for our people everywhere.

Purely Commentary

ASSOVER is a traditional period for the discussion
of those elements of universal freedom for which
libertarians have fought throughout the centuries.
It is, in a sense, like MOther's Day, when we choose to
be especially nice to Mother; or Father's Day, when we
utter niceties to Father; or Sweetest Day of the Year,
on which we buy extra portions of sweets for our be-
loved. In a sense, these occasions are merely periods for
extra emphasis. Actually, Mother and Father are loved
at all times, else our human sparks are shams; and Free-
dom can become reality only if we are conscious of the
need to battle for its defense every moment of our lives.
The Passover of 5708 is a time of most crucial chal-
lenge to Freedom in known history. Three years ago,
in moments of certainty of mankind's triumph over the
Nazi-Fascist ideologies, we rejoiced over the victory of
the democraCies. A year ago, we visualized the coming
of an era of liberation for the survivors from. Nazisin
a reconstituted Jewish CommOnwealth. Today, some
of our hopes appear shattered, and the challenge to our
sense . of Freedom is especially pressing. Therefore—
the current need for re-evaluation of the principles
which - we hoped would become the guiding standards
for a freedom-loving. "lid.

Our misfortune at this time is that, as in all crises,
the moment there is a setback in acquiring human rights
the frightened scurry for shelter. They . run for cover
rather than face the challenge to courage.
For a passing moment Jews of all ranks, in this
country and overseas, rejoiced over the United Nations'
decision for the reconstitution of Jewish statehood which
was to end the tragedy of Jewish homelessness. Then
came -setbacks. • Instead of adhering to, sacred deciSions,
great governments began to break promises. A war was
.instigate& on the 2,000-year-old Jewish dream for the
realization of the Prophecy of the ingathering of the
: exiles of Israel. Thousands of lives have been sacrificed
on the altar of international inefficiency. Out of it all
came false accusations against the Jewish fighters for
freedom in Judaea—and then began the scurrying of the
fearfuL

There • are several elements of fright in Jewish ranks
which call fOr calm review of our Jewish positions.
In all our experience with Christians, we never have
encountered criticism on the score of "dual allegiance."
Liberty-loving Americans know that Jews have as much
right to encourage the establishment of freedom for our
people in Palestine as the Irish had to fight for Irish
liberation or as the Poles and Czechs had to battle for
Polish and Czechoslovakian independence. It is always
the fightened Jew who raises the issue.
Take the Cincinnati columnist who was invited to at-
tend a protest meeting against the betrayal of America's
traditional policy on Palestine. He suddenly became
panicky over an imaginary conflict between his Jewish-
ness and his Americanism, and he came to the conclu-
sion that he is a Jew only by religion and that as an
American he could not go to the protest meeting. The

Junior Workers
Report $43,000
Collected for AJC

The 900 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign Junior Division workers
and captains have intensified
their canvass of 12,000 prospec-
tive contributors and reported
that $43,000 already has been col-
lected.
Quota for this year's campaign
is $75,000. The Junior Division
has until May 6 to collect that
total, Leonard Baruch and Bar-
bara A. Greenberg, campaign
chairmen, said.
Baruch said that the Junior
Division has received response
to direct mail sent to potential
contributors — "something that
we didn't expect at the begin-
ning of the campaign." A num-
ber of persons who could not be
reached at their homes have
sent their contribution, together
with the letter, to the Owen
Building campaign headquarters.
One man, typical of many oth-
ers, wrote, "I am rarely at home.
Sorry you can't get me. Enclos-
ed find my contribution for $25"

Detroit. lladassah Leaders Condemn
Murder of Di. Yassky and Organized
Arab Campaign on Doctors, Nurses

In a • statement issued this
week, Mrs. "Harry L. Jones,
president of Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah, condemned the out-
rageous mass murder of 64 Had-
assah doctors and nurses and
Hebrew University professors in
Jerusalem and appealed for the
cooperation of the Christian
community to support Jewish
aspirations in Palestine and to
express indignation against the
murder of Dr. Haim Yassky and
his associates.
Outlining the events of the
past few weeks, Mrs. 'Jones,
whose statement also carries the
signatures of 40 other Hadassah
leaders in Detroit. enumerates
the many Arab outrages per-
petrated against Jewish doctors
and nurses since Dec. 30, 1947.
The statement declares in part:
`Gratitude' for Service
"Only six months ago, Dr.
Haim Yassky, speaking in De-
troit at the dinner that was giv-
en in honor of Mrs. Joseph H.
Ehrlich, one of Michigan's out-
standing women leaders, made
it a point to emphasize the non-
sectarian character of the hos-
pital he was directing and to
give assurance that the planned
Hadassah - Hebrew University
Medical School would never
countenance percentage norms
and that all students—Christians,
Jews and Mohammedans—would
be treated alike. An Arab bul-
let is the gratitude he received
for more than 20 years of service
more to the Arab communities
than to the Jewish in Palestine
in advancing the health of the
Holy Land and in eradicating
trachoma—the eye disease with
which more than 80 per cent of
the Arabs were afflicted when
he first came to the Holy Land.
"The death of Dr. Yassky is
part of an organized campaign,
winked at by the British, ignored
by American 'statesmen' who
now are betraying a policy that
was so ardently pursued at the
last session of the General As-
sembly of the United Nations, of
sniping, of refusing to recognize
symbols of mercy, or shooting
down doctors and nurses who

Jewish cause was in no sense hurt by his panic, but we
believe that his American spirit was undermined.
The issue that is raised by such fears is whether Jews
have a right to criticize their own Government. We are
convinced that they have.
A quarter of a century ago, liberals of all faiths
joined in a battle against an amendment to the state
constitution which would have outlawed parochial
schools. Rabbi Leo M. Franklin, who—it is no secret—
lends his sentiments to the Council for Judaism which is
the chief encourager of the fear of "dual allegiance," will
recall a significant meeting that was held by Detroit's
then only existing Bnai Brith lodge. Bishop Gallagher
was the principal speaker at the overcrowded meeting.
Condemning the attack on freedom of religion inherent
in the proposal by which the voters were to decide the
fate of Catholic parochial - schools, Bishop Gallagher
quoted from the Declaration of Independence and as-
serted most emphatically, to the cheers of the large as-
sembly, that even if the amendment were to pass he and
his people "reserve the right to rebel" against a law
which they consider tyranny.

It is our sincere belief that any betrayal of a sacred
trust leads to tyranny and we protest against the actions
of our present administration on the question of Pales-
tine.
Every liberty-loving citizen should have the right to
condemn unjust action. In the reversals of the Truman
administration lie injustices of a serious nature, and
they must inspire r a ther than dispel courage in the
battle for freedom. Only the fearful yield to tyranny.
The battle against tyranny must not be limited to
Christians, and we dare not run for cover simply be-
cause some one has raised the false cry of "dual al-
legiance."
On the contrary, when-responsible officials encourage
such a false cry and permit foreign propagandists to
question the loyalty of American Jews, it is our added
obligation to raise our voices in condemnation of in-
decency. If we permit injustice against ourselves NOW,
it may be enforced against our neighbors TOMORROW.
When Camille Chamoun of Lebanon had the audacity,
in an address before the UN Security Council, to ask the .
U. S. representative to "advise certain members of your
press, who were confounding Zionist interests with those
of the American nation, to calm down their hysterical
and clamorous campaigns" and to demand that 'Ameri-
can Zionists be American citizens and nothing but
American citizens," his outburst was an insult not: alone
to the 5,000,000 American Jews (deducting from this
number the few thousand frightened adherents of the
Council of Judaism) but derided also established Ameri-
can traditions. By keeping silent on this point, the U. S.
representative at the UN added injury to insult; and
Jews who encourage fright in relation to our right to
battle for justice are harming the truest American ideals,

In the nation's capital a few days ago, this Com-
mentator was saddened to hear defeatist comments by

are at work healing the wounds
of Arabs and Jews alike. The
death of Dr. Yassky is part of
the 'organized Arab threat to oc-
cupy or even 'demolish the Had-
assah Hospital and , the Hebrew
University, a threat 'made recent-
ly by the military commander of
the Palestinian Arabs, Abdel
Kader El-Husseini, a kinsman of
the former Mufti who was one
of Hitler's chief collaborators in
the war on humanity.
"At least 30 major incidents of
attacks on the Hadassah hospi-
tal, of sniping at Hadassah am-
bulances and transports, of the
murder of Hadassah doctors and
nurses are on record. It is an
intolerable situation which can
be corrected only if American
public opinion is aroused. It is
for this reason that the Jewish
women of Detroit appeal to our
entire community, and especially
to the women of Detroit, to join
with us in condemning the in-
difference of State Department
officials, in placing blame for
horror in the Holy City of Jeru-
salem where it belongs—at the
doOrsteps of the British and the
invading Arab hordes, as charged
by the UN Palestine Commission
on April 14 in its report to the
General Assembly.
Public Opinion Important
"American . sympathy made
possible the independence of Ire-
land, Poland and Czechoslovakia.
American public opinion can do
a lot to put an end to the trag-
edy in Palestine and to assure ad-
herence to a sacred pledge by
our own Government—in support
of the re-establishment of the
Jewish Commonwealth in ac-
cordance with Prophecy. It is in
support of such elementary jus-
tice that we direct this appeal
to our fellow Americans in a
period of mourning over the
death of one of the world's
greatest physicians who died a
martyr while serving the needs
of his fellow men of all faiths."

Passover Thoughts: Basic Principles In
Fight for Justice: . As Long as There
Are Libertarians, There Will Be Liberty

responsible leaders in our Government on the score of
Jews and Palestine. Last year these same people warned
that a rise in terrorism in Palestine would cause an in-
crease in anti-Semitism. Now, they tell us that they
await with horror the arrival of American soldiers to
help enforce law and order in Palestine. (Four months
ago their argument in support of procrastination in im-
plementing the UN decision was that they were opposed
to the sending of American troops to Palestine!) Jews
in and out of Palestine have consistenly fought against
terrorism—just as our Chief Rabbis last week severely
condemned terrorist acts in the course of the capture of
an Arab village. To assume that anti-Semitism rose
with the incidents of terrorism is to be false to reality,
Jew-baiting eras having so frequently darkened the
pages of history without similar visible excuses. If
American troops should go to Palestine and their ar-
rival should result in conflicts, new wrongs will have
been committed if anti-Semitism is deduced to be a
result of Jewish resistance.
The problem already is at .our doorstep and we must
meet it. The moment we permit it to be said tiat at-
tacks upon Jews are the result of our sins, we belie our
entire history. The moment we yield to every demand
by our antagonists on the promise that it will be the
only way of ending anti-Semitism we will be yielding
to a sort of destructive despair, and to intimidations. And
if we yield to such false assumptions we shall merely
relegate ourselves to second class citizenship and to de-
moralization in our ranks.

There has been general agreement, in periods of calm
rationalizing over just dealings between Christians and
Jews; that Jews merely are the victims of anti-Semitism;
that the disease is a Christian one; that
the non-Jewish world must cure it. We,
in turn, will be betraying accepted
principles if we suddenly reverse the
thinking of generations on the subject,
if we consent to making anti-Semitism
a Jewish sin and a Jewish disease.
Meanwhile, we have another duty;
to help hold high the torch of freedom
and to prevent the tearing down of the
light that emanates from Bedloe Island
through the Statue of Liberty. For
generations we proudly looked to Lady
Liberty for encouragement. For a cen-
tury and a half men of courage held
fast to the right to criticize injustice
and to fight for decency. We shall be
tearing down the arm that carries the Statue of Liberty
torch of freedom if we abandon this
sacred ideal.-
Let us remember the basic principles of Freedon ,
this Passover of 5708. And let us hold fast to the
viction that as long as there are Libertarians there
be Liberty.
