Baking Matzohs in Germany
Tel Aviv Zion's Only Port
Open to Jewish Shipments
Modern Morals Viewed
From Scientific Angle
Violence in Palestine has closed
all ports but Tel Aviv to Jewish
shipments, according to Moshe
Pomrok, representative of the
Palestine Maritime League in this
country. Harbor facilities are
jammed up in Haifa because of
the difficulties of transshipping
Jewish goods, and as many as 44
ships can be waiting to unload
at one time, stated Mr. Pomrok
in a report to Edward A. Nor-
man, president of the American
Fund for Palestinian Institutions
and co-chairman of the Pales-
tine Maritime League in this
country.
"Life and Morals," a Macmillan-
published volume by Dr. S. J.
Holmes, professor emeritus of
zoology of the University of Cali-
fornia, advocates divorcement of
morality from ,metaphysics and
theology. Life sciences and evolu-
tionary ethics are urged as a basis
for moral teachings and prac-
tices.
Theologians therefore will thor-
oughly dislike this book, which
includes in its examinations the
Jewish ethical teachings. Find-
ings the Hebrew ethics of old
completely authoritarian, Prof.
Holmes asserts that in the
Psalms, the Prophets and the
Proverbs Jewish moral teachings
are less clannish and . on a much
higher level but on a no less au-
thoritarian plane.
He argues that in the Old Tes-
tament there is no philosophizing
over the fundamental basis of
morals as found among ancient

dining hall accomodates several
hundred children, has dairy and
meat kitchens.
Children are instructed in

by children from all parts of
Canada and the U.S.
A summer home for adults
near the camp accommodates 60

Manischewitz's Gefulte
Fish Creates Sensation
"Tell it to your grandmother,"
skeptics used to say, because only
grandmothers were supposed to
believe impossible tales. . . Well,
the food world has been enjoying
a blessed event in the delicacy
department which represents a
fish-story to end all fish-stories.
The B. Manischewitz Company,
world-famous M ifzo bakers for
the past 60 years, sprang it on a
skeptical public which said, as
folks have been saying for gen-
erations: GEFULTE FISH? You
can never get it like Grandma
used to make it!
Manischewitz Co., with a record
of traditional food-making of
three generations, took up the
challenge and put its universally
acknowledged "Know-How" to
use. After months of research, of
experimentation, of trial and er-
ror, Manichewitz Co. came up
with a GEFULTE FISH that has
grandmothers shaking ••- their
heads ruefuily. . . . "If only they
had done this . when we were
young, how Many ycars of hours
we could have saved!"
All the choice ingredients, just
the right blend of them, are pack-
ed into jars containing sir lus-
cious portions of the kind of GE-
FULTE FISH Grandma used to
make.

Greeks and that Jewish ethics
were based on the principle that
since the Law • was given man's
duty .was to .obey and to live in a
spirit of gratitude to the Maker.
Such approaches, Prof. Holmes
admits, have furnished incentives
to the development of kindly
feelings among men and he adds
that as Jews advanced in their
cultural development their ideas
of morality broadened; influenc-
ing and shaping the religious con-
cepts of Christianity.
