Page Fifteen" THE JEVVISH NEWS .r rrkfaY, April 9, 1948 Between You and Me By BORIS SMOLAR (Copyright. 1948, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) is no longer any secret . . The Jews in Palestine have heavier weapons than anyone suspects ... And they may even have at their disposal small naval units to • protect immigration and muni- tions ships . . . Such ships will be reaching the shores of the Jewish State on the day following the British surrender of the Mandate . . . There will be no fear of their being intercepted by the British Navy since Britain will no longer be the "boss" in Palestine's waters. It is a mistake to think that the Jews in Palestine depend on American-made arms . . . The lifting by the United States of its arms embargo for the Jewish fighters would, naturally, help to no small extent in securing more weapons . . But its primary effect would be to help the Haganah get arms in certain European and Latin American countries at prices much lower than are quoted at present . . . These countries are now charging exorbitant prices when selling munitions to the Jews in Palestine, only because they know that the Haganah cannot buy arms in the United States. There is a good deal of embarrassment in Washington official circles over the results of a study now completed by the Foreign Policy Association . . The study establishes that the picture pre- sented to the American public on the danger of losing the next war if the U. S. does not get oil from the Middle East was definitely exaggerated . . . The direct strategic value to America of Middle Eastern oil has been "decidedly overstressed," the study shows . . . Dr. Bernard Brodie, professor of International Relations at Yale University and author of several books on sea-power, naval strategy and defense problems, directed the study ... He asserts that the first fundamental goal of strategic oil policy for the United States must be the possession "within our own territory or close to it" of a vast fund of readily available oil . . . To this end, he urges the encourage- ment through government subsidies of further exploration for oil within the U. S. and also the development of a synthetic oil industry.
