THE JEWISH NEWS

Friday, March 26, 1948

Speaking at a meeting of the
professional division of the De-
troit Service Group, Rabbi Max
J. Wohlgelernter told the follow-
ing characteristic anecdote:
An old-time schnorrer in a lit-
tle east European town had set
his mind on visiting Frankfort for
a personal solicitation of the
head of the Rothschild family.
He worked for years to scrape up
the necessary fare and finally

reached the imposing house. The
doorkeeper would not admit him.
Long persistence and the assur-
ance that he would merely speak
one word to Reb Anschel Roth-
schild finally prevailed.
When he faced the rich man
the beggar said, "Geb,foRo," an-
other word for Talmud.
"What is that?" asked the be-
wildered Rothschild.
"An abbreviation which stands
for 'Good Morning, Reb An-
schel.' " Rothschild was now in
good humor and asked further,
"Well, -what - do you want?"

"GeMoRo," again replied the visi-
tor, followed by the explanation,
"Give Money Reb Anschel."
This novel form of schnorre-rei
elicited a good check, but the poor
man was dissatisfied.
"GeMoRo," he persisted. "What
now!" Rothschild was beginning
to show his impatience. "GeMo-
Ro," was the persistent reply,
again an abbrevation of 'Give
More Reb Anschel.' "

Could you let a child starve?
Millions will if you don't help.
