Ribalow's Book Shows How Jewish
Athletes Have Attained Sports Fame

Harold U. • Ribalow's name is
well known to Jewish readers.
His articles from war fronts re-
vealed a facile pen. His analyses
of situations abroad. while in the
army, were among the most in-
teresting we had published. He

HANK GREENBERG
also is known as a Hebraist. He
is the son of Menahem Ribalow,
editor of the Hebrew weekly,
Hadoar.
Now comes his long-awaited
book: "The Jew in American
Sports," published by Bloch. It
is a magnificent volume, well
written, fully illustrated, cover-
ing almost completely the vari-
ous sports field in which Jews
have been and are active.
There were many close-ups in
the book, including sketches of
Hank Greenberg and Benny
Friedman. Andy Cohen, Johnny
Kling, Harry Danning, Charles
"Buddy" Myer, Morrie Arnovich,

"Goody" Rosen, "Dolly" Stark,
Benny Leonard, Jackie "Kid"
Berg, Ai Singer, Barney Ross,
Marshall Goldberg, Sid Luckman,
Nat Holman, Sidney Franklin
and other outstanding athletes
are the subjects of fascinating
articles. There are. of course,
special articles on the numerous
sports in which these heroes were
or are active.
The book is, in truth, a history
of the Jew in America's sports
fields. The intimate sketches
about the outstanding Jewish
athletes will be read with en-
thusiasm by young and old. Base-
ball, football, basketball, boxing,
tennis, golf and other sports are
fully covered.
The preface to Ribalow's book
was written by Barney Ross. It
reads, in part:
"When Harold Ribalow gave
me the galley proofs of his book
and asked me to write its preface,
my first reaction was wonder ...
wonder that anyone should write
such a book and wonder that
any publisher should consider it
saleable. I discussed the matter
with a few of my friends. We
all agreed that the act of singl-
ing out one -particular group,
social, racial, religious or even
fraternal and writing a book
about its ability in some partic-
ular field seemed more of a

chauvinistic indulgence than a
contribution to either literature
or history. My feeling was one
of resentment that a book should
have to be written to recognize
the abilities of my fellow Jews
in sports. •
"Finally I decided to read the
galleys. I discovered that Riba-
low had written about Jews in
sports, not to glorify them, nor
to point with pride and say
`Here, see what the Jews have
done. Are we not acceptable"?'
Instead, through long and ardu-
ous research, he 1-las collected a
number of anecdotes and person-
ality sketches about many fam-
ous figures in the world of sports.
