S. Plan Called Conspiracy To Keep British Troo s . Zion No Surrender ! AN EDITORIAL A shocking betrayal was perpetrated at Lake Success, N. Y., on March 19. The honor of the United States was shockingly dragged through the mire, the charter of the United Nations was transformed into a scrap of paper and the rights of the Jewish people to security and peace were reverted again to Nazi-like interpretations. March 19, 1948, becomes a date akin to the Munich sell-out. The tragedy of the outrageous re- pudiation of justice, and the substitution of oil mixed with blood for decency, is that it is a betrayal of American principles of fair play. The American spokesman at the UN, by assert- ing that the General Assembly's partition plan "can- not now be implemented by peaceful means," cold- bloodedly ignored or failed to admit the fact that no other plan can possibly avert enforcement by military rule. He failed to recall that the decision of Nov. 29, 1947—another date to be recorded in the annals of 'diplomacy as offering peace while the betraying statesmen carried daggers under their cloaks of sanc- tity—was not expected to pass altogether peacefully. Meanwhile, over a period of nearly four months, in- nocent blood of Jews and Arabs cried to the high Heavens against the inhumanity of statesmen to man- kind and against the elevation of oil wells above the basic principles of human relations. • Completely devoid of morality, the latest be- trayal means only one thing: it is an attempt on the part of the big powers, with the endorsement of American politicians, to relegate the Jews of Pales- tine to a status of second class citizenship and to impose upon Eretz Israel permanent slavery. This is a ruling we cannot accept. No man has a right to condemn another man to slavery. No one, even if he is an American "statesman," can dictate terms of serfdom to a people that has fought for freedom for others and has resolved to continue that fight for liberty for itself. To this sadly humiliated people in Judaea we pledge our wholehearted support. Y.—Charging that the United States' reversal . of policy on partition came as a result of an agreement with Great Britain that the latter's troops are to remain in Palestine after May 15—the date set for the expiration of the mandate—as part of a maneuver to check Russian moves in the Middle East, authoritative sources here are fearful that even the fierce battles of th e past few days in Palestine will pale into insignificance compared with the outburst of resentment that will be shown to any British attempt to remain in Palestine to help destroy the Jewish State. (After setting April 4 as the date for a meeting of the Zionist Actions Coin- . mittee Executive to put into effect the recent composition of the provisional govern- ment, the Jewish State was proclaimed in Palestine on Tuesday night, to commence functioning on May 16—immediately after . the expiration of the mandate.) Jewish leaders here generally endorse the views of David Ben-Gurion and other Palestine Jewish leaders who have declared that a "de facto Jewish regime" already exists in Palestine and that Britain in practice acc epted it "as the equivalent to a successor government." Proposals by the U. S. spokesmen to the Security Council that - a special ses- sion of the UN General Assembly be called in April to set up a Palestine trusteeship and thereby to nullify the Nov. 29 decision will be fought to a finish and a reversal will never be accepted, it became apparent on Wednesday. - Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, declared that the reversal in policy announ ced by Warren Austin places the "Ameriari. Government in the position of fighting the Jews in Palestine." He declared. in a 90-minute speech at a meeting of the administrative committee of the Zionist Organization that "this is unthinkable, but I have seen many unthin kable things happen in this crazy world of ours." He charged that oil interests are trying to defeat the partition plan and that oil companies "won the enthusiastic support of S ecretary of Defense Forrestal, who was iden- fied with oil interests for years." He listed S ecretary of State Marshall, Robert I. Lovett, Loy Henderson and Norman Armour as opponents of partition who "finally persuaded President Truman to become a convert." The ZOA administrative committee v oted "utmost support" of whatever action may be taken by the Jewish community of P alestine to implement the UN decision and expressed "horror" at the prospect of the use of force against Palestine Jewry "implicit" (Continued on Page 19) Drive Starts with Gifts of $1,502,000 Unprecedented liberality of a group of men who gathered at* Hotel Statler on Tuesday evening for the initial pre-campaign meeting for the Allied Jewish Campaign chalked up a record contribution of $1,357,000. This is an increase from the same group of $546,000 over their gifts of last year. At the same time, a group of women who met in an adjoining hall to listen to the addresses of the evening increased their last year's $100,000 gifts to $145,680. Thus—the total amount raised Tuesday night—$1,502,000— marks the beginning of the 1948 campaign for a goal of $6,200,000. Maurice Aronsson, chairman of the drive, presided at the meeting, proclaimed the drive "our most important campaign," and asserted that all efforts will be made to raise the entire goal. Fred M. Butzel introduced the two guest speakers — Rabbi Philip Bernstein of • Rochester, N. Y., former Advisor on DP Affairs to the U. S. Army in Germany, and Harold Goldenberg of Minneapolis—and explained that former Governor Herbert H. Lehman was prevented from coming here by serious illness and that "last week's events were of such a nature as to cause Gen. Hilldring to cancel all speaking engagements." He read a message to the gathering from Mr. Lehman. • Rabbi Bernstein declared that "if governments can be so cynical and can yield to terror and treachery, then our own safety is at stake."
