Ferguson Backs Movement
To Double DP Entry Quotas

WASHINGTON. (JTA) —, A
group of Democratic and Repub-
lican Senators announced dissat-
isfaction with the Senate Judici-
ary Committee proposal to admit
100,000 displaced persons to the
United States within the next
two years and said , they would
campaign for the admission of at
least 200,000 during the same
period.
The bi-partisan drive is headed
by Senator Homer Ferguson (R-
Mich.) and Senator J. Howard
McGrath (D-R. I.) The latter
is chairman of the Democratic
National Committee.
The Senators insisted that the
committee's proposals which
would admit 50,000 DPs a year
for two years under certain re-
strictions, should be amended.
Senator Ferguson announced he
will offer an amendment from
the Senate floor which will raise
the over-all figure to 200,000 to
be admitted to this country by
June 30, 1950.
Sen. Ferguson expressed confi-
dence that his amendment would
be' approved. Sen. McGrath, ex-
pressing dissatisfaction with the
committee bill, declared that be-
cause of the housing and voca-
tional restrictions attached to it,
he doubted that even 50,000 dis-
placed persons would be able to
enter the country.
The committee's bill specified

that at least 50 per' cent of the
DPs admitted to the U. S. must
be agricultdral workers, that they
must be "needed" here and that
they must be able to obtain "de-
cent, safe and sanitary housing
without displacing some other
person."" McGrath ,asserted that
the requirement that half of those
admitted be farmers was "unjus-
tified," in view of the present de-
mand for skilled workers in the
garment, textile, logging and fish-
ing industries.
