MUNICH, (JTA)—Gen. Lucius
b. Clay, U. S. commander in
Europe, flatly rejected requests by
Jewish leaders here to grant offic-
ial DP status to Jewish refugees
who entered the American zone
of Germany after' April 21, 1947,
and at the same time ordered the
recent arrivals to move out of

the Jewish DP camps in which
they are now . living into German
refugee centers.
The appeal by Jewish leaders
that the approximately .1,000 Jew-
ish refugees from Hungary and
Romania affected by this ruling
be permitted to- live in a camp
apart from German DPs was alSo
turned down.
Dr. William Haber, advisor on
Jewish affairs to the U. S. com-
mand in Europe, 'conferred with
Gen. Clay on the question of the
so-called "illegal" DP last week.

`The Price of Liberty': History
Of American Jewish Committee

."The Price of Liberty," by Nathan

Jewish Committee, 386 Fourth Ave.,

The sub-title—"A History of the
American Jewish Committee"—
might lead to the supposition that
the appeal of this book is too spe-
cial to attract a wide audience. I
trust that no one will be so mis-
led. "The Price of Liberty" is a
thoroughly exciting narrative and
it is to be heartily recommended
to all citizens who have an inter-
est in effective and efficient ae-
mocracy.
: The five distinguished and
thoughtful Americans Who called
a meeting of prorninent Jews in
1906 for the purpose of organiz-
ing a committee to aid suffering
people of their belief throughout
the world could hardly have fore-
seen what was to follow. By the
time a Committee of Fifty had
been organized, such proposals as
to include in the'statement of the
Committee's' purpose the phrase
"to promote the welfare. of Juda-
ism" had been defeated, and one
simple purposeful sentence, a sen-
tence which has been "rigidly ad-
hered to ever since, had been
adopted: "The purpose of this
COmmittee is to prevent infringe-
nient of the civil and religious
rights of Jews and to alleviate the
consequences of persecution."

in the intolerable heat of a peo-
ple's wrath. One of the things the
Committee learned as time went
on was that denials of venomous
charges sometimes do more harm
than good. - They learned what to
ignore and what- to attack. They
learned to emphasize the positive
qualities of their people, their
priceless contributions to Ameri-
can life through science, the arts
and industry. They learned that
discrimination against any minor-
ity group is in effect an injustice
to all minorities.
Mr. Schachner has written an
honest report. When there were
unpleasant disagreements he has
recorded them. It is amazing that
there have been so few. He has
made very clear the differences
between the American Jewish
Committee and the extreme Zion-
ists and anti-Zionists over the
question of Palestine. In: eloquent
words Judge Joseph M. Pros-
kauer, current president of the
Cominittee, has uttered the Com-
