Name Detroiters National Chief
To USNA Board

NEW YORK—Twelve commu-
nity leaders in two Michigan
cities have been elected to the
board of directors for 1948 of
United Service for New Ameri-
cans, major welfare agency as-
sisting survivors of Nazism corn-
ing to haven in this country, it
is announced by Mrs. Irvirig M.
Engel, chairman of the board.
Chosen as board members
were: Dr. William Haber of Ann
Arbor and the following Detroit-
ers: Mrs. Samuel R. Glogower,
Mrs, Rose Lipson, Miss Henrietta
Robinson, Mrs. Herbert Smith,
Mrs. Joseph M. Welt, who was
also elected honorary president of
United Service; Fred M. Butzel,
Julian Krolik, Judge Theodore
Levin, Isidore Sobeloff, Abe
Srere and Henry Wineman.
With other leaders in 148 com-
munities throughout the country
they will take part in shaping the
$13,600,000 w elf are program
which United Service will pro-
vide this year for the immigra-
tion, reception, resettlement, and
adjustment of refugee newcom-
ers. Largest of its kind ever con-
ducted in this country, the
United Service program is fi-
nanced through the $250,000,000
campaign of the United Jewish
Appeal • for 1948.

Youths Charged with Murder
Of Fascist Leader Are Freed '
LONDON, (J T A) — Gerald
Flemberg, and John Wimborne,
who were charged with attempt-
ing to murder John Preen, a
British fascist-leader, were freed
when the case was thrown out
of court after the presiding mag-
istrate dekribed Preen as "a Wit-
ness I cannot believe upon his
oath."

Yola Lee, national president
of the Intercollegiate Zionist Fed-
eration of America will be in De-
troit this month for the annual
Regional Zionist Youth Institute
which will be held here.

Schottland, who will come
from New York especially for the
affair, entered the. army in Octo-
ber, 1943, and was discharged in
September, 1945, with the rank .
of lieutenant-colonel.- He served
for a year and a half as execu-
tive of the SeleCtion Board, Pro-
vost Marshall General's Office.
From June, 1944, to September,
1945, he was on the staff of Gen-
eral Eisenhower as chief of sec- .
tion of the displaced persons
branch. In thiS capacity he was
also in charge. of all relationships •
with .UNRRA and private agen-
cies. From September, 1945, to
December, 1945, he was assistant
director of UNRRA 'tor Ger-
many.
He is a graduate of the Uni-
versity of California at Los An-
geles, attended the University of
California Law School, is a mem-
ber of the California Bar and a
graduate of the Graduate School
for Jewish Social work in New
York City. Among the positions
Schottland has held are: Admin
istrator, State Relief Administra-
tion of California, 1933-36; execu-
tive director, Federation of Jew-
ish Welfare Organizations of: Los
Angeles and 'Los Angeles Jewish
Community Council, 1936-41; and
administrator, Jewish Child .Care
Association of New York, 1946.
While in petroit, Schottland
plans a series of conferences with
Jewish welfare leaders as well
as the leaders of the Department
of Michigan, Jewish War Vet-
eran's.

Ferris Institute
Starts Industry,
Trades Classes

Ferris Institute's new Trades
and Industry Building is now
ready for occupancy, according
to Byron H. Brophy, president.
The Trades and Industry depart-
ment will transfer its classroom
and laboratory equipment to the
new quarters just prior, to the
spring term opening On March 8.
President Brophy pointed out
that this move would release
much-needed space for other
departments, which are rapidly
expanding with both veteran and
non-veteran enrollment.
It was pointed out that the ex-
pansion of the Trades and,

school's founder, - Woodbridge N.
Ferris, to provide "education for
the actual duties of life."
Among the foreign students
who recently enrolled at the Fer-
ris Institute are the four Pales-
tinians, Alexander Aizenberg,
Gregory Wolosow, Akiva Perel,
and Shalom Katzprowsky, who
are studying pharmacy. These
students haVe received numerous
invitations to tell their experi-
ences before Michigan gatherings.

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A cam-
paign to raise $500,000 for the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
will be launched here this spring,
it was announced by the Ameri-
can Friends- of the Hebrew Uni-
versity. Dr. Israel S. Wechsler,
president of the group, said that
the drive, which will be climaxed
by a $1,000-a-plate dinner, will
also mark the 30th anniversary
of the founding of the University.
The month of April has been
designated as "Hebrew University
Month," it was announced by
Philip G. Whitman, newly-named
chairman of the campaign, who
also disclosed that there are now
150 American students studying
at the University.

four midwestern states, will be
staged the weekend of March 26.
Meetings will be held at Bnai
Moshe, Shaarey Zedek and the

Upholds Ban on Novels

NEW YORK. (JTA)—The .ban
on the circulation of two popular
novels attacking anti-Semitism in.
America in the library of a large
New York high school was tip-
held by Frederic Ernst, associate
superintendent of the academic
high school division of the Board
of Education. He indicated that
the order holds for other schools
in the city, if the books are
banned by the school principals.
Ernst announced the retention
of the - ban on "Gentleman's
Agreement" and "Focus" after a
committee of teachers in De Witt
Clinton High School repOrted that

volumes they found nothing 'ob-
jectionable in them and urged
that the ban imposed by Dr. John
B. Walsh, principal, be rescinded.
