tional Council plenary meeting

thirds majority to form a tem-
porary Jewish Council of Gov-
ernment composed of Jewish
Agency members residing in Pal-

and representatives of five or six
major parties and •groups which
• will elect the provisional gov-
ernment and provide for the
government apparatus.

JERUSALEM—It was learned
Tuesday that an attempt on the
life of General MacMillan, Brit-
ish commander in Palestine. was
made Monday by Arabs attack-
• ing a Jewish convoy which in-
cluded the British military party.
- The convoy was attacked just
before Babelwad, about 30 miles
west of Jerusalem. General Mac-
Millan was advised by the staff
to leave the car and wait at an
- inn for reinforcements, which he
did. Between Babelwad and Kir-
yat Anavim, a car was blown
up and a new attack launched
- on a convoy with particular em-
phasis by Arabs on military ve-
hicles. In this attack one Jew
was killed.
(Richard Mowrer, in a cable
from Jerusalem, states that the
exiled Mufti has won in his
effort to induce the Arab
League to resort to a campaign
of violence in Palestine.)
At dawn Tuesday, a battle
_
was renewed in the area which
is in the midst of Arab towns
and concentrations of Syrian
Iraqi troops. Haganah men
rushed from Jerusalem to Kiryat
Anavim and engaged Arabs in
a six hour battle. Aram casual-
ties are known to be 11 dead and
20 wounded. There were no Jew-
ish casualties reported. At one
time three large Arab bands op-
erated against several Jewish
settlements and Haganah forces
between colonies. Settlements at-
tacked were Neveilan and Ma-
quis.
Sternists Blast Troop Train
Twenty-six British soldiers
were killed and 50 wounded seri-
ously enough to require hospi-
talization when a Cairo-Haifa
troop train was blown up by
three mines near Rehovoth. The
Stern Group immediately as-
sumed responsibility for the ac-
tion, asserting that it was in
retaliation for last Sunday's ex-
plosion in Jerusalem in which 54
Jews died.
(An AP report from Jeru
salem quoted the Stern group
as charging the British with
abducting 24 Jews and turning
them over to Arabs in retalia-
tion for the rail blast. It is
reported that six of the Jews
were found murdered.
