Cornerstone Ceremonies Scheduled
For New Beth Shmuel Synagogue
Rabbi Joseph Rabinowitz of Congregation Beth Shmuel an-
nounced this week that the cornerstone for the new synagogue build-
ing, on Dexter and Buena Vista, will be laid at ceremonies at 1 p.m.
Sunday, March 21. In the event of rain it is planned to hold the
ceremony at the nearby Wilshire Motor Sales.

Congregation Beth Shmuel was
organized 23 years ago upon the
arrival of Rabbi Rabinowitz from
the Ukraine. The young Hassidic
rabbi won a large following, his
popularity in Russia having pre-
ceded him. The synagogue was
named in honor of his grand:
father, the Hassidic Rabbi
Shmuel'ke who was known as the
Brezner Rebbe. He is the son of

Yeshivah Lauded by Dr. Dondineau;
March 14 Dinner Ends Torah Month
"The historic role of American
schools has been to uphold the
ideals of free governrnerit and to
make democracy function for the
good of the whole community,"
declared Dr. Arthur DOndineau,
superintendent of Detroit Pub-
lic Schools, at graduation exer-
cises held Feb. 29, at Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah.
"The great American experi-
ment in free government in
which the principles of personal
liberty, free opportunity and re-
spect for the rights of one's
neighbors, regardless of origin or
religious belief, finds its fullest
expression. in our schools, both
public and private," Dr., Dondi-
neau said, and paid tribute to the
Yeshivath program with its em-
phasis upon the moral and ethical
teachings of Judaism.
Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter,
president of the Yeshivath, .re-
called that the Beth Yehudah
Day School opened its sessions
in. 1944 with seven students. To-
day its classes number 250 pupils.
He pointed out that the Day
School idea in Jewish education
goes back to Colonial days, when
Shearith Israel Congregation in
New York established its first
school of the Day School type.
"The Day School movement,"
Rabbi Wohlgelernter explained,
"has for its aim to dev-elop the
whole Jewish character and per-
sonality and, together with the
public school, promote the high-
est interests of American de-
mocracy."
Martin Rubenstein and Uriel
Mandelbaum delivered valedic-
tory talks for the elementary and
intermediate graduating classes.
Dr. Hugo Mandelbaum, principal,
presented the diplomas.
The exercises were part of a
series of events in the Yeshivah
in observance of Torah Month.
The culminating function will
take place Sunday, March 14, at
the sixth annual patrons' dinner,
at the Bnai Moshe. Rabbi Uri
Miller of Baltimore, president of
the Rabbinical Council of Amer-
ica, will deliver the address.

Jerusalem Yeshivah Asks Aid Here
Rabbi A. N. Sonnensohn has
been sent from Palestine to seek
immediate aid for the Jerusalem
educational centers, Yeshivath
Tilfereth Zvi and Yavne Talmud
Torah.
These combined institutions, in-
cluding six branches and a free
kitchen, with a total enrollment
of 600 students and 28 rabbis and
teachers, has been particularly
hit by the present critical situa-
tion in the Holy City, and im-
