Palestine Musk History

Dwindling Colony
Of Jews Remains
In Southern India

Less than 100 Jews, residing
in the ancient citylof Cochin, near
the southern tip of India, are the
remnant of the colony of 10,000
Jews who fled Roman oppression
in Palestine, 1,900 years ago.
In a separate section of the
community, which is one of the
most densly populated areas in
the world, the descendants of the
Palestine pilgrims have lived the
14th century, according to the
National Geographic Society.
The site was granted to them
by a friendly Maharajah of
Cochin, who allowed them to
build a synagogue beside his
temple. At that time, the Jew _ s
moved from their kingdom Of
Anjuvannum, 20 miles northward.
In -their synagogue they re-
tain many relics of their stay in
India, including copper plates by
whose inscription a Maharajah,
in the year 379, ceded lands to
the leader of the colony, estab-
lishing him as the first Jewish
king out s ide of Palestine.

The story of the founding of
the Palestine Philharmonic Or-
chestra by Bronislaw Huberman,
world-famous concert violinist,
will be presented on the Eternal
Light program, at 8 a. m. Sunday,
Feb. 22,, on station WWJ.
The script, entitled "The Re-
turn of the Ransomed", has been
written by Morton Wishengrad
to mark the fourth national obser-
vance of Jewish Music Festival.

Mrs. Dilling, Stokes Wed
On Jan. 21 in Chicago, Mrs.
Elizabeth Dilling, 53 year old
divorcee, and Jeremiah Stokes,
pamphleteer and lawyer of Salt
Lake City, aged 70, were united
in matrimony. It is widely as-
sumed that one of Mr. Stokes'
functions on behalf of his bride
will be to collaborate with her
former husband, Albert Dilling,
in furthering libel suits which
Mrs. Elizabeth Dilling Stokes has
started
