Sun Life Co. of Canada
Reports Year's Business

MONTREAL-{The Sun Life. of
Canada, -with 41 per cent of its
business and 50 per cent of its
securities in the United States,
broke all records in 1947 with $380
millions of new business for • the
year, bringing the total now in
force to nearly four billion dollars.
Total assets are now approxima-
tely 11/2 billion dollars.
Payments to policyholders and
beneficiaries over the year
amounted to more than $100
millions while the total of such

policy was issued in 1871 now
exceeds two billion dollars.
Arthur B. Wood, president of
the company, in review of the
year'S operations at the • 77th
annual meeting held here, stressed
how life assurance dollars go to
work for the nation. "The part
life assurance plays in our econ-
omic sysetm," he said, "is not
limited to its primary function of
affording security to the individ-'
ual as, by the very nature of the
business, the companies, in the
investment of their funds, contri-
bute greatly to the welfare of the
country."
During 1947,, Wood continued,
the Sun Life of Canada had
distributed to its policyholders
and beneficiaries the sum of
$102,000,000 of which $32,000,000
was paid to beneficiaries of policy-
holders who died during the year.
The sum of $40,000,000 was paid
out to living policyholders. Other
paythenis included 413,000,000
distribuTed in payments to annu-
itants, a n d $15,000,000 in div-
idends to Policyholders.
