Hart's `Get . Your Gun'
Campaign C
on
demned

Mervin K. Hart's new cam-
paign to have every American
get himself a gun is treated by
the Christian Science Monitor in
an editorial under the heading
"Annie, Get Your Gun"?, as fol-
lows:
Mervin K. Hart, president of
the National Economic Coun-
cil, thinks that every Amer-
ican patfiot should get himself
a gun — "and if he has more
than one it will do no harm."
The purpose is that he "may
not be defenseless if what hap-
pened in Spain and France
happens here."
Mr. Hart's organization is re-
ported to have some very pow-
erful and prominent right-wing
backers. He himself was pub-
licly associated before the war
with Christian Fronters, Bund-
ists, Coughlinites, and other ex
treme-rightists.. He has attacked
"democracy" as un-American.
He has ardently defended Fran-
co Spain. He castigates those
who supported the last war
and unconditional surrender;
the present bipartisan foreign
policy; the United Nations.
Thus genuine Americans, ac-
cording to Mr. Hart's formula,
must constitute a very small
proportion of the citizens of the
United States — almost as small
as the • number of Communists
in the country. It is not surpris-
ing that violent opposing min-
orities should put their ulti-
mate faith in bullets rather
than ballots. They ought, how-
ever, to recognize the debt of
gratitude each owes the other
for furnishing it with a scare-
weapon to attack the good sense
and democratic faith of the
American.people. as a whole.
