Lewisohn Sees Spiritual

Religious Leaders Urge
UN To Outlaw Genocide

LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA) —
More than 100 Catholic, Protest-
ant and Jewish religious leaders
joined in urging the United Na-
tions to immediately adopt a
genocide treaty to outlaw the
mass destruction of national,
racial and religious groups.
In a petition, presented to
Henri Laugier, UN assistant
secretary-general in charge of
social affairs, the churchmen
asked that the United Nations
enact necessary legislation for
preention of this "heinous crime"
which "undermines the very
foundations of civilization;
poisons human relations; spreads
like a disease and kindles war."

"Only through the study of
the humanities and the great
spiritual tradition and insight can
society free itself from being
throttled by its materialism and
mechanical devices." Dr. Ludwig
Lewisohn, eminent publicist, ed-
itor of the New Palestine, told
a large. gathering at the forum of
the Men's Club of Shaarey Zedek
Jan. 28.
Albert 'Green, president of the
Men's Club, presided.
LeWisohn declared that out of
the religious experiences of the
past Jews can draw the instru -
mentalities of its salvation and
contribute to the advancement ,
of civilization. ' "Palestine," he I
said, "where Israel is being united
with its destined envirornent, will
witness a flowering of those at-
titudes- and= inSights_ which are so
desperately needed. There must
be a 'rebirth of human • values.
The . ultimate meanings of human
experience cannot be suggested
by the accomplishments of
science."'
