Temples to Honor Revered
Leader of Liberal Judaism

Dr. Leo Baeck, 75-year-old world leader of Liberal Ju-
daism, former Chief Rabbi of Berlin, will be the principal
guest of Temple Beth El and Temple Israel at a banquet
Tuesday evening, Feb. 17, at the Statler Hotel. His visit is
part of the American Jewish Cavalcade, a nation-wide relig-
ious emphasis program sponsored by the Union of American

Hebrew Congregations.

Dr. Baeck, who arrived in this
country Jan. 5, was received at
the White House by President
Truman Jan. 8. His visit is part
of a three-month tour coast-to-
coast.
A survivor of two years in the
infamous Nazi concentration
camp at Theresienstadt, Dr. Baeck
was the leader of, the German
Jewish community during the
Hitler era. Shortly after Hitler's
rise to power, he was named
chairman of the Union of Reich
Jews. In Germany, he was presi-
dent of Bnai Brith and honorary
president of the Jewish National
Fund.
Dr. Baeck continued as the voice
of German Jewry until he was
forcibly taken to a concentration
camp in 1943. Though imprison-
ed, he continued to conduct reli-
gious services and classes. After
his liberation in May, 1945, he
. resided in England where, in
July, 1946, he became president
of the World Union for Progres-
sive Judaism.
Author of "The Essence of
Judaism", a book first published
in 1905 and translated into Eng-
lish in 1936, Dr. Baeck is known
for his scholarly achievements.
He was awarded honorary degrees
by two American seminaries, He-
brew Union College of Cincinnati
and Jewish Theological Seminary
of New York.
Dr. Baeck will share the pul-
pit with Rabbi Ferdinand Isser-
man of St. Louis on the "Mes-
sage of Israel" radio program
on Sunday morning, Feb . 1,
from 10 to 10:30 a.m., over the
network of the American Broad-
casting Company.

Solomon to Aid Plans
For Yeshivah Dinner

Samuel B. Solomon was named
co-chairman of the sixth annual
observance of Torah Month at
Yeshivath lieth Yehudah, ac-
cording to Morris W. Zack, gen-
eral chairman. The Torah Month
observance will be climaxed by
the annual patron's dinner, Mar.
14, at Bnai Moshe.
Solomon, president of the
United States Steel Corp., has
long been associated with the
Yeshivah's program.

Jan. 22 at the home of Harry E.
Citrin, ticket -co-chairman. Rabbi
Joshua Sperka spoke as a parent
of children attending the Yeshi-

panel on inter-faith and inter-
racial problems at a meeting
Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the syna-
gogue.
