Your Pledge to JNF

By DIANA ARLIN
In the fervor of the moment,
You pledge to do your part.
You show that yo've a conscience
And that it weighs upon your heart.

You want to lend a hand, •
And so you give your word.
You can't extend the cash at once,
To doubt you would be Unheard!

Don't- just shake your . head, and agree
To do your share, but give! •
Words won't buy, and thousands die
Who might otherwise yet live:

Division Spotlight

MRS. CARL S. SCHILLER

Many an active worker in the
Women's Division of the Jewish
Welfare Federation and other
communal affairs traces her en-
trance into social service activi-
ties to the encouragement of one
of Detroit's most energic volun-
teers Mrs. Carl S. Schiller, chair-
man of workers for the division
in the 1947 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign.
Getting people to work with
as well as for her is one of Mrs.
Schiller's special talents, which
has been demonstrated in her
success as co-chairman of the
Division's arrangements commit-
tee (with Mrs. Harry Jacobson)
and as a member of the commit-
tee on committees. She brought
this gift for inspiration and per-
suasion into play during her war
service on the Central Volunteer
Bureau of the Selective Service
and as chairman of the War Ef-
fort Board of the League of Jew-
ish Women's Organizations.
The mother of two children,
Donald S. Schiller and Mrs. Hen-
ry H. Berris, Mrs. Schiller now
looks forward proudly to the
time when she can recruit her
two grandchildren, Jan and James
Berris, into community activities.
Mrs. Schiller, a native of Chi-.
cago, Ill., has been a pioneer in
women's organizations in Detroit
for 30 years. She was founder
and honorary president of De-
troit Chapter of National Home
for Jewish Children at Denver;
served as vice-president of the
League of Jewish Women's Or-
ganizations; vice-president of the
Sisterhood of Congregation Shaa-
rey Zedek; vice-president of Cen-
tral States Region of Hadassah;
senior adviser to Little Women
of Hadassah; has participated in
the programs of many Federation
member agencies, as a board
member of the United Hebrew
Schools and Jewish Home for
Aged, and on the case committee
of the Jewish Social Service
Bureau.
Mrs. Schiller also has a hobby
—but her friends insist it is no
fish story that she keeps their
deep freeze lockers well stocked
through Izaak Walton activities.
