At Seminary Dinner, Jan. 19 Gains Supporters

Announcement was made this

Abraham Stere has been nam-
ed chairman of the special com-
mittee for the drive. Morris H.
Blumer is co-chairman. Louis
Berry and Samuel B. Solomon
are chairmen of the special gifts

Laymen to Conduct
Sabbath Services

The Men's Club of Temple
Israel will conduct the congrega-
tion's annual Laymen's Sabbath
Eve service at 8:30 p. m. Friday,
Jan. 16, at the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
Guest speaker for the evening
will be Dr. Jay J. Sherman, pro-
fessor of government at Wayne
University, whose topic will be
"Religion in the Colleges."
Participating in the service
will be Charles H. Aller, Nathan
Baron, Nathan Kolb, Dr. Martin
E. Kohn, Irving Levy, Jacob
Levy, Cantor Robert S. Tulman,
organist Karl W. Haas and Rabbi
Leon Fram.

The need - for an addition to
the buildings which house Yeshi-
vath Beth Yehudah has become
acute as a result of a marked
increase in enrollment this ,year,
Rabbi M. J. Wohlgelernter, pres-
:dent, and Rabbi Simcha Was--
serman, dean, have revealed. The
main building at Dexter and Cort-
..and contains six classrooms and
the annex directly across the
street has eight. In order to meet
an immediate emergency situa-
tion, consideration is being given
to convert a garage, in the rear of
the annex, into classrooms.
. The Yeshivah:s administrative
committee has appointed a build-
ing committee to consider the
construction of a new building
on a lot adjacent to the present
building, or to build a second
floor to the main building,
Plans for the sixth annual pa-
trons' dinner are being made by
a committee headed by Morris
W. Zack, who announces the ap-
pointment of Max W. Temchin,
ticket chairman; David Goldberg,
yearbook chairman; Morris Mohr,
dinner chairman, and Abraham
Caplan, publicity chairman. The
affair will take place March 14
st Bnai Moshe.
Gatherings being held in con-
junction with the anniversary
celebration are scheduled in the
homes of Harry Citrin, Irving W.
Schlussel, and Morris W. Zack.

Orthodox Principles
In New Jewish State

Young Israel • will hold its
fourth Friday evening forum of
the ;season .at:8:30 p.m.- this Fri-
day, at Yeshivath Beth Yehnclah.
Guest speaker will be Rabbi
Shrotrio"G-likstnan, whose topic
will be "A Constitution for the
New Jewish State, Based upon
Orthodox Principles." Rabbi
Gliksman will discuss constitu-
tional proposals • set forth by
Mizrachi and Agudas Israel..
- Rabbi Gliksman, who was rab -
bi of Cong., Beth Yitschok in
Danzig and director of the Sem-
inary for Jewish Studies in that
city, has held several rabbinical
positions in America, the • most
ecent at Cong. Ateres Zion, Chi-
cago. In Detroit he is director
of American-European-Palestini-
an Correspondence Office. His
talk will be followed by a dis-
cussion period. A Women's
League committee, under the di-
rection of Mrs. Morris Subar, is
in charge of refreshments at the
Oneg Shabbat.



MRS. AARON J. BLUIVIENAU
of hospitality for the Torah
Scholarship Fund drive luncheon
to be given Feb. 3 by the Sister-
hood of Shaarey Zedek.
At a meeting of workers at a
luncheon at the home of Mrs.
Richard A. Cott of Chicago Blvd.,
enthusiastic reports were given
indicating that new supporters
were. enrolled for the fund dur-
ing the past week.
Mrs. Abe Katzman, president,
stated that it is aimed to secure
an additional $9,000 to complete
the $21,500 scholarship contribu-
tion to the Jewish Theological
Seminary.
Mrs. Irving Miller, 2650 Law-
rence, will be hostess at a tea
and rally for workers at 1:30
p. m. Wednesday, Jan. 14.

based upon the life of one. of the
foremost contemporary Jewish
scholars, and member of the fac •
„thy of the Jewish Theological.
Seminary of America, will be
featured on the Eternal Light, at
8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11 on WWJ.
A brilliant student of the Bible,
Israel Friedlaender was not satis-
fied to remain only in the aCa-
demic world, but felt impelled to
act bn his ideals. In 1920, while
on a mission for the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, attempting to
rescue Jews trapped by the pog-
roms in Eastern Europe, Israel
Friedtaender lost his life. His own
words may stand as his epitaph:
"History is not made by philos-
ophers, but by martyrs . . . by

Bnai Moshe Luncheon
Ends Member Drive

The annual membership drive
of Bnai Moshe Sisterhood will
culminate with a paid-up lunch-
eon in the social hall of the
synagogue, Monday, Jan. 12.
Mrs. Alfred Gunsberg is mem-
bership chairman, with 'Mrs. 'Sam
Freednian acting as chairman of
the luncheon.
Daniel Frohman will direct the
choral group of the Music Study
Club, with Rose Stein as accom-
panist.
A committee representing the
Sisterhood entertained inmates
of Eloise Hospital before the holi-
days. Refreshments were served
by Mesdames Harry Sarnler,
David Krause, William New,
Julius Hersch and Eugene E.
Weiss.

Publish New Handbook
For Jewish Clergymen

On Jan. 12, Jonathan David Cog,
50() Fifth Ave., New York, will
publish a new handbook for Jew-
ish 'clergymen entitled "A Pock-
etbook -for The Jewish Clergy-
