SCHAVER, honorary chairman, Detroit Palestine Histadrut drive: ISAAC HAMLIN, national secretary; HELEN WARREN; HARRY SCHUMER, Histadrut chairman. More than 750 friends of the Detroit Palestine Histadrut Labor drive filled Brown Memorial ▪ Chapel of Temple Beth El to over- flowing on Sunday evening to herald the opening of the 1948 Gewerkshaften drive, and demon- strated their solidarity with labor Palestine by subscribing in ad- vance a $65,000 emergency loan to Histadrut. - The loan will be repaid -with gifts to the drive in the next-60 days. The spontaneous response came after a stirring appeal by Isaac Hamlin, national secretary of the Gewerkshaften drives, who called for mobilization of -American Jews in the war against the forces of reaction in the Middle East in the same fashion that Americans . mobilized for war after the Pearl Harbor attack. He exposed the Mufti's war of reaction against world Jewry and the Jewish state and declared that Histadrut youth, constituting from 80 to 90 per cent of Haganah's -manpower,. have "left the plow with which they conquered the Negev to take up the gun to defend every outpost." Mr. Hamlin challenged Amer- ican friends of Histadrut W sup- ply the funds necessary for the purchase of armored . cars and trucks to protect the lifelMes to the Jewish settlements; for planes , to bring food to the colonies; for the 'building of a new Histadrut hospital in the Negev 'and to care for surviving relatives of Histad- rut members who fell in battle in defense of Jewish positions. In addition to the $65,000 sub- scribed as a loan, Morris Schaver, honorary chairman of the drive, presented Mr. Hamlin with a check for $25,000 as an advance from a small group of Histadrut friends. • It was announced that an emergency Histadrut - confer- ence has been called for Jan: 18 and Detroit delegates are be- - lug assigned to attend the par- ley. It is expected that $1,000,- 000 will be sent to Palestine by Histadrut from that confer- ence to be held in New York. Harry Schumer, campaign chairman, gave assurance that the- 1948 Detroit Campaign would raise no less than $250,000, an in- crease of $100,000-over the previ-' ous year. He • reported that ad- vance . contributions to the Cam- paign were double and three times, last year's. Miss Helen Waren, former Broadway actress, an official. of Americans for Haganah, told the audience that in, the present vio- lence, Great Britain is actually hampering the defense efforts of Haganah. She continued, "We must show them that we have covered our hearts with steel and that we -stand shoulder to shoul- der with . the Haganah"; and de- clared that "Histadrut gave birth to Haganah. Haganah defends ( - what belings collectively to the Jews." • Campaign Officials The Conference selected the fol- lowing officers and executive committee members for the 1948 campaign: - .Morris L.
