Detroiter Graduates
From U.S. Merchant
Marine Academy

Samuel D. Saferstein, son of
Mrs. G. Saferstein of the Richton
Ave., was the only Detroit Jew-
ish graduate of the United States
Merchant Marine Academy at
Kingspoint, Long Island. He re-
ceived a dual appointment as en-
sign in the U. S. Naval Reserve
and U. S. Merchant Reserve at
exercises last month.
A graduate of Central High
-School, where he was president
of his graduating class, Saferstein
was a scholarship student at
Wayne University when he re-
ceived his appointment to the
Merchant Marine Academy. Ac-
tive in Jewish youth work, he
was Aleph Godel of Highland
Park Chapter of AZA.
While at the Academy, Safer-
stein was in charge of cultural
and religious activities for Jewish
cadets. He also was campaign
manager for his graduating class,
and played with the champion-
ship intramural softball team.
He now holcls an engineering
license for steam and diesel
ocean-going vessels and is a jun-
ior member in the Society of Na-
val Architects and Marine Engi-
neers.
