Pamphlet Explains
Rise of White-Collar
Work Among Jews

"Occupational Patterns", By Nathan
Goldberg. Number two of the series,
"Jewish Life In America," edited by
Bernard D. Weinryb and published by
the Jewish Teachers' Seminary and
People's University.

Since the decenial census of the
U. S. furnishes no information on
occupations- according to religion,
we know very little about the
economic structure of the Jews in
this country. Nathan Goldberg
pieces together the available
scraps of information and dis-
cerns some pattern in the econ-
omic development of the Jews
in the U. S.
The immigrant Jews were
mostly employed in the lower
paid branches of industry. The
reduction of immigration after
the first World War and the grow-
ing up of a second and third
generation resulted in a change
in the occupational structure of
the Jewish population. The op-
portunities inherent in the Amer-
ican environment gave the Jews
a possibility to ascend the socio-
economic ladder and to take up
the occupations which were then
expanding in America - trade,
white-collar work and the pro-
fessions.
The author foresees a decline
in retail stores among Jews and
an increase in the number em-
ployed in large stores. Gold-
berg's, methodological analysis of
the availabel material on Jewish
occupational structure may also
