Segregation, Restrictive Covenants
Condemned by Community Council

A statement released by Oscar
Cohen, executive director- of the
Jewish Community Council, clar-
ifies the Council's position on the
situation in the 12th St. area and
declares:
"The Jewish Community Coun-
cil believes in American demo-
cracy and in the ethical concepts
on which the Constitution of the
United States and the Bill of
Rights are based. We have made
public our opposition to Restric-
tive Covenants and any kind of
discrimination against any group.
We recognize that prejudice and
discrimination exercised against
any one group is harmful to all
groups and to the enthre com-
munity.
"We recognize the right of any
property owners to sell property
to- any buyer regardless of race,
color, creed or national origin.
However, when property is sold
in a spirit of hysteria and panic,
such action is harmful and dan-
gerous because then it gives pub-

lic expression to prejudice and
to false ideas about our neigh-
bors. SuCh action if continued
would in a relatively short per-
iod create a segregated neighbor-
hood. No group wants segrega-
tion.
"We deplore the rumor-mon-
gering which has existed in the
12th St. neighborhood. Jews who
have been themselves the victims
of rumors on many occasions
should recognize the danger of
believing and passing along false
stories. We call upon residents
of the 12th St. area to resolutely
ignore idle gossip:
"We believe that Jews should
and can live in harmonious rela-
tionship with their neighbors re-
gardless of their race, color or
creed. Such spirit would make
for a better community and will
make any transition which is oc-
curring or may occur in the
12th Street area an orderly
process over a relatively long
period of time."
