THE JEWISH NEWS

Miraculous escapes from the
clutches of the Nazis, participa-
tion in the battles against Fasc-
ism with the Italian partisans,
work with the U. S. army and
his experiences with the Italian
people were described last week
by Leo Smulevich, who visited
in Detroit for a few days on a
transit visa. •
Smulevich was the guest, here,
of his cousin, Harry Schumer of
Pennington Dr., before leaving
on Sunday for Melbourne,
Australia, where he will make
his home with his two sisters.
He was sent by hiS family—all
of whom have been murdered by
the NaZis—from Poland to join
his uncle in Italy, in 1933. He
was then 12 years old.
Praises Italians
Smulevich spoke in glowing
terms of the fairness and decen-
cy of the Italians. Even Mus-
solini, he said, was not an anti-
Semite, and it was only when
he was forced by Farinnaci, in

against the wishes of most Ital-
ians. He, his uncle and famtly
were taken to a concentration
camp near Naples and were kept
there until 1940.
Gen. Badoglio's order resulted
in their release, but with the ar-
rival of the Nazi SS troops
came years of struggle and

structions by radio from the
American forces.
In
1944 Smulevich and a
cousin of his who had studied
English and other languages in
Switzerland were accepted as in-
terpreters by the U. S. Army.
That year he became an army
tailor and was attached to U. S.

and then to Co. A, 503rd Military
Police Battalion at Florence.

Finds Italians Friendly

Smulevich maintains that the
Italian government is friendly to
the Jews, that the police of the
country—except for the minority
of Fascists—are not prejudiced
and that only the present sad
economic conditions are forcing
an overwhelming pro-Commun-
ist sentiment among the Italians.
One of his sisters has lived in
Australia for 18 years and the
other for nine years—the latter
having left Poland only a year
before the country was taken
over by the Nazis.

Guest speakers at the annual meeting of the United Serv-
ice for New Americans, scheduled Jan. 11 in New Y o r k, will
include REP. WILLIAM G. STRATTON OF ILLINOIS (left),
author of the Congressional bill to speed DP immigration to this
country, and WATSON B. MILLER (right), U. S. Commissioner
of Immigration and Naturalization. The agency's $13,600,000 pro-
gram for speeding adjustment of Jewish newcomers during the
coming year will be crystallized at the meeting. The USNA's
work is financed by the United Jewish Appeal.
