"The new year's here.
What will it bring?
Joy and kindness,
That's the thing!
Let us see the world stay free
And man to man brother be."
Ushering in the new year are
parties galore and some wonder-
ful resolutions. Don't forget that
now's the time to resolve to be
a better individual.

Pamphlet Finds Released
Time Is No Solution for
U. S. Religious Illiteracy

Christians, Jews Named
To Committee Positions
For Brotherhood Week

Released public school time for
religious educatipn has not in any
appreciable extent met the prob-
lem of the growing religious illit-
eracy of American youth.
This is one of the major con-
clusions reached by Leo Pfeffer,
assistant director of the Commis-
sion on Law and Social Action, in
his pamphlet "Religion and the
Public Schools", published by The
Office of Jewish Information,
American Jewish Congress, in its
Jewish Affairs pamphlet series.
Pfeffer's pamphlet, based upon
an exhaustive and objective study
of the actual operations of the
released time plan over a 35-year
span, conclude that "the dangers
and disadvantages of the released
time program for religious educa-
tion outweigh by far the benefits
which may be derived from it".

P•o•linent figures in the world
of education, religion, the press,
radio, motion pictures and other
publio media have been selected
to head committees in their re •
spective fields to enlist support
for American Brotherhood Week,
sponsor ed annually by the Na-
tional Conference of Christians
and Jews, it is announced by Rev.
Joseph Q. Mayne, executive sec-
retary of the Detroit Round Table
of Catholics, Jews and Protes
tants.
Dr. Joseph R. Sizzo, Rev. Allan
P. Farrell, S.J., and Rabbi Mau-
rice N. Eisendrath will serve as
co-chairmen of the Committee on
Churches and Synagogues. Israel
S. Chipkin, executive director,
American Association for Jewish
Education, is one of the vice.
chairmen.
John. S. Knight heads the
Newspaper Committee. Spyros
Skarn as. president of Twentieth
Century-Fox, is 'chairman of the
Motion Picture Committee and
David 0. Selznick, chairman of
production. John Farrar, -of Far-
rar and Straus, publishers, is
chairman of the Magazine Com,
mittee.
Brotherhood Week, which in
1948 is being observed Feb. 22-29,
has as its honorary chairman,
President Truman, and as general
chairman, Robert P. Patterson,
