THE JEWISH NEWS

Heard in the Lobbies

By ARNOLD LEVIN

(Copyright, 1947, Independent Jewish Press Service, Inc.)

Washington Note

Jamal el Husseini is a busy beaver these days. The Saudi Arabian
and Iraqi legations have sponsored several gatherings addressed by
Jamal at which funds were raised for the Crescent, Moslem equiv-
alent of the Red Cross. Gullible Americans might be deceived into
supporting the Crescent for purely humanitarian reasons. Nothing
humanitarian about these collections. In 1936-39 the Mufti dispatched
fund raisers to Latin America and India for the purpose of raising
funds' to repair the Omar Mosque, the moneys however going for
something less sacred, namely—for the payroll of mercenaries hired
by the Mufti to conduct a campaign of violence and pillage. The
Crescent campaign seeks funds for a similar purpose—not to heal,
but to wound; not to rescue, but to kill. \Isn't it high time for the
ktate Department to investigate this fund raising for the purpose of
subverting a UN decision and setting off a conflagration in the
Middle East?

Shekel Campaign

The Shekel campaign is underway. We pray that the campaign
leaders of the various Zionist parties will conduct a more dignified
campaign this year than they did in 1946. We hope they will be fully
cognizant of the solemnity of the occasion, fully aware of the respons-
ibilities involved. And wouldn't this be a good opportunity for each
party or bloc to candidly present its program for Zionism, frankly
discuss its idealogical differences with other parties so that the voter,
whatever his final choice, might have an opportunity to become en-
lightened about the many facets of Zionism? How about arranging
in each community a shekel rally at which spokesmen for all the
parties in American Zionism might present their views, explain their
parties' platform and reply to questions from the constituencies? How
about it— a new deal in shekel electioneering?

Our Letter Box

Excerpts from Letters
MRS. SAMUEL LICHTEN-
STEIN commenting on the re
cent article in The Jewish News
on Kiplinger's view on Palestine,
writes: "Charity has outlived its
function. We should not do char-
ity but share; there should be
ro benefactor or benefited; there
is a feeling of smugness on one
part, resentment on the other.
It is time we reorganized our
giving, basing it on the principle
of sh a ring. of helping ourselves.
What we do, or try to do, for our
people in Europe, what we do
for Eretz Israel, we do for our-
selves, our dignity, our people,
our state, ourselves."

WALTER FARBER, in a
lengthy letter regarding those
who propose that the Zionist
movement be liquidated, de-
clares: "Only those misinformed
or ignorant of present conditions
would utter the aboVe Hillul
HaShc'm. It is sheer blasphemy to
speak with such irresponsibility."
Mr. Faber writes a lengthy resu-
me of events in Zionism and be-
fore the UN pointing to dangers
of delays in action and British
sabotage and warns:• "Give Eng-
land until 1948 and you commit
Hari-Kari. We must not permit
the Be.vin Arab - Mufti plan to
gain ground. The Jew and every
non-Jew who loves peace and be-
lieves in the possibility of at-
taining it should cry from every
house top and be heard. A public
opinion aroused can perform mir-
acles. Exposure will abort the
plan of the knaves and compel
them to release their quarry.
Only thereby can we prevent
Continued bloodshed in Pales-
tine."

LOUIS PANUSH, disagreeing
with the Jewish News Commen-
tator's item on Weizmann, sets
forth numerous views why he, as
"a Rcvisionist," disapproves of
Dr. Weizmann; why he does not
trust Weizrnann's British friends;
that 'we have done enough ac-
cepting and surrendering"; and
he concludes: "Many of us, in-
cluding Dr. Weizmann, are hard-
ly aware of the infamous role
Brita;.n is now playing with the
expressed purpose of aborting
the pal titioned Jewish 'State' be-
fore it is ever born. I suppose
this is 'extremism' and that I am
a 'Moshe Machiavelli' because I
fail to agree with Dr. Weizmann,
or with Maurice Samuel, or with
you. 1)o you call the record of
history the agitation of an 'ex-
tremist Zicnist'? Do we all have
to be 'yes' men?"

London Jewish Vets
Arrested on Charge
Of Shooting Bigot

Friday, January 2, 1948

Off the Record

Inside Palestine

LONDON, (JTA)--c-Two lead-
ers of the British Jewish veterans
organization "The Forty-Three
Group" are being held under
arrest without bail on the charge
of shooting "with intent to mur-
der" at John Preen, founder of
the British Fascist Vigilantes Ac-
tion League.
Police alleged that the two—
Gerald Flamberg, 25, and John
Wymbourne, 20—fired at Preen
from a car hired by Flamberg on
Monday night. Flamberg' is chair-
man of "The Forty-Three Group"
and has an outstanding war rec-
ord. He fought in Africa and
Holland where he was captured.
He was disabled, by his wounds
and is now on a government pen-
sion. Wymbourne also has a
good war record.
In opposing
the release of the two on bail,
the police inspector said he fear-
ed "intimidation."
Meanwhile, the Edinburgh
Trades Council adopted a resolu-
tion urging that the government
outlaw all fascist organizations,
particularly Sir Oswald Mosley's
latest "Union Movement." The
resolution also calls for legisla-
tion providing heavy penalties for
all persons who advocate anti-
Semitism and other forms of race
hatred.
It was reported that Mosley. is
involved in the efforts of Arab
groups in England to recruit anti-
Semitic volunteers to fight in Pal-
estine against the Jews.

The new year will witness the establishment of a Jewish state
in Palestine either peaceably and in compliance with the UN decision
or by revolution . . . This will happen despite the nefarious propa-
ganda, despite British hostility and despite lack of arms ... Zionist
leaders "fear international intrigues more than the Arabs" because
they realize that "not all who voted for partition are our friends"
. . . This is what Berl Locker, of the Jewish Agency executive, told
a group of friends on the eve of his departure from the U. S. .
Efforts are afoot by Zionist leaders to gain some o degree of British
security cooperation when turning over power to the UN imple-
mentation commission .. .Though not reported, that matter was def-
initely discussed at last week's conference in London between a dele-
gation of the Agency executive and Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech
Jones.
Moshe Shertok has flown back to Palestine but he will return
within a week.
The meeting of the Zionist Actions Committee may be post-
poned to February because of the slow momentum of the implemen-
tation commission.
Arab pressure is behind Bolivia's failure to name its representa-
tive to the commission . . . Bolivia's president is expected to take a
personal hand in having the representative named this week.
Eliezer Kaplan, Jewish Agency treasurer, who flew to the U. S.
to attend the recent UJA national conference is back in Palestine
where he is centering attention on floating a 'bond issue and loans.
The fight between the "pound" and the "dollar" is having its
repercussions in Palestine where the fiscal experts are working on
monetary problems . . . The "pound" may triumph despite the fact
that the largest part of financial aid has to come and will continue
to come froth. the "dollar" area.
A three-cornered race may develop for the honor of being the
first president of the Jewish state with Weizmann, Silver and Ben
Gurion the candidates ... Of the three only Ben Gurion is at present
a Palestinian citizen.

Under the Spotlight

Herbert Bayard Swope will address a Zionist gathering for the
first time . . . The occasion will be the testimonial dinner for Dr.
Abba Hillel Silver on the eve of his departure for Palestine.
Prof. Albert Einstein has ordered a check on the organizations
listing him as a member . . . He will publicly sever affiliation with
all partisan institutions, particularly those not pursuing purely hu-
manitarian causes.
Joseph Levy, former Palestinian correspondent for the New
York Times and himself a Levantian Jew, has frequently been
blasted by Zionists for his hostile dispatches . . . His coverage of the
Palestine issue before the General Assembly for a leading Egyptian
daily did not gain him any friends in those circles.‘
The splendid editorials on Palestine in the New York Post were
CARD OF THANKS
authored by George L. Cassidy, editorial page editor.
Mrs. Locker, wife of Berl Locker, is a famous Yiddish poetess.
The family of the late Rebetzen
Sarah Fine thanks their friends . At a party given in her honor by Dr. and Mrs. J. Kling, whose
and relatives for the many acts home has been a literary salon for Jewish artists for more than
three decades. Mrs. Locker said she was pleased her husband had
of kindness shown them in their chosen politics as an avocation . . . Otherwise, she said, she would

have had another competitor in the literary field.
