Keren Hayesod and the United
Palestine Appeal. He will report
to the conference on his recent
visit to Palestine.
Miss Waren, former Broadway
and radio star, who has devoted
her efforts since the war to help
Jews in DP camps through emig-

associated with the Americans

of Haganah.

Lauded by Weizmann
Mr. Lieberman, stressing the
role played by 300,000 members
of Histadrut and the importance
of the 1948 Detroit Histadrut
Campaign, calls attention to a
cable , received by the Histadrut
Exectitive from Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann who declared that Zion-
ism's "success is due greatly to
your self-sacrifice and devoted
service."
Histadrut campaigns, conducted
under the auspices of the National
Committee for Labor Palestine in
500 Jewish communities in the
United States, Canada and ma-
jor Central and South American
countries, has the support of 4,000
organizations, representing a total
membership of 1,000,000.
Histadrut's role in the upbuild-
ing and defense of Palestine is
summarized as follows:

' Histadrut, General Federation
Of Jewish Workers in Palestine,
constitutes more. than 40% of the
Jewish population. For 25 years,
it has aimed to build a Jewish
State on the principles of social,
justice and cooperation.
Histadrut is the chief source of
pioneering manpower that re-
deems the land and erects pion-
eering settlements; it is the back-
bone of Haganah; it provides
emissaries engaged in rescue
operations among European Jew-
ry. •
Histadrut campaign funds are
used in three ways: 1. As pioneer
capital, to initiate activities which
no other private or public agency
is prepared to undertake; 2. to

ABBA HUSH!

Abba Hushi, 'one of the most
colorful leaders of the Palestine
labor movement, will address the
first rally of delegates and work-
ers of the Detroit Histadrut
(Geverkshaften) Campaign o n
Thursday evening, Jan. 8, in the
auditorium of the Labor Zionist
Institute, Linwood near Pasa-
dena. The public is invited.
Abba Hushi, a firm believer
that Jews and Arabs can get
along in the Holy Land, was the
founder of the Palestine Labor
League, which embraces the His-
tadrut and the Arab groups
friendly to the Jews who have
helped organize and advance the
cause of the Arab workers. As
secretary of the Haifa Labor
Council since 1931, a position of
vital importance in developing
Arab-Jewish relations,' he was
responsible for the fact that Haifa
was singularly free of discord.
In 1946, when the British arrest-
ed many leaders of the Jewish
Agency and Histadrut, Abba
Hushi was among those ."wanted".
He was given a safe hiding place
by Arab friends as dramatic proof
of the high esteem in which he
is held by Arabs. He came to

Special to The Jewish News
WASHINGTON.—In a strong
appeal in support of his measure,
"S-1563, A Bill to Authorize for
a Limited Time the Admission of
Certain Displaced Persons Into
the United States for ,Permanent
Residence," Senator Homer Fer-
guson of Michigan outlined
numerous available methods of
helping the DPs in Europe and
went on record against "forced
repatriation." He declared:
"There is the possibility of
forced repatriation but I am con-
fident that such a course of ex-
posing these people to past or
possible persecutors is repugnant
to .every American."
Senator Ferguson made the
statement in an address before
the Sub-Committee on Immigra-
tion and Naturalization of the
Senate Commit-
tee on the Judi-
ciary, in his ap-
peal in behalf of
the measure
which he intro-
duced together
with Senators
Ball, Smith,
Saltenstall,
Bricker, Cooper,
Hatch, McGrath
Sen. Ferguson and Morse. He
pointed out that the DPs "are the
human flotsam and jetsam of the
cruelest war in history; that*of
the '850,000 DPs 550,000 are in
U. S. zones of occupation; that
the U. S. spent $130,000,000 for
their upkeep in 1947 and appro-
priated $73,000 to the Inter-
national Refugee Organization
and that more than half of the
DPs are women and children, 21
per cent being children under 18,
66 per cent in ages of 18 to 44
and 13 per cent over 44.
Only 20 Per Cent Jews
Of the 20 nationalities among
the DPs, he said, 65 per cent are
Catholic, 20 per cent Jewish and
15 per cent Protestant. He read
a list of national organizations
of all faiths, including the AFL

and CIO, which have gone on
record supporting his bill and
placed emphasis on the fact that
"our rigid immigration quotas
have been calculated to absorb
many more than the number who
would seek admittance at the
present time." He emphasized the
\ significance of occupational cate-
gories of employable DPs, repre-
senting 140 skills, and he listed
the percentages of the following
categories:

Construction and maintenance
6.7
Administrative, clerical - commercial 11.3
Agriculture, forestry, dairy, food
processing
24.5
Health and sanitation
3.2

services

After a lengthy explanation
of the various aspects of his bill,
Senator Ferguson concluded his
statement with the following
appeal:
National Symbol
"Mr. Chairman, let us remem-
ber the inscription on that na-
tional symbol, the Statue of
Liberty: 'Give . me your tired,
your poor, your huddled masses
yearning- to breathe free. The
wretched refused of your teeming
shore. Send these, the homeless,
tempest-tossed, to me! I lift my
lamp beside the golden door.'
Never before have those words
had greater meaning. But what
these tempest-tossed people need
today are homes, not homilies.
I am sure that it will give our
own people, and men the world
over, faith in the peace we are
still building if we were to pro-
vide that shelter. I earnestly
hope that this sub-committee and
the Congress may give this bill
not only favorable but speedy
action."
