1948--Year of Hope
Hope sustains the surviving Jews of Europe. They are
ushering in the New Year 1948 with new vigor, tackling
the "hardy perennial" tree of hope with confidence that
the encouragement which came on Nov. 29, 1947, from the
United NatiOns will grow into a powerful weapon for
justice and will lead to the total eradication of stateless-
ness and homelessness.
Young and old, 1,421 mothers and fathers, children
and infants—as shown in the photos below—entered
-Palestine on one of the recent boats that brought in-
ternees from Cyprus. They were the vanguard of the
75,000 newcomers who are expected to enter the Jew-
ish state in 1948. The United Palestine Appeal provides
for the transportation of the new settlers in Judea, with
-funds of the 1948 United Jewish Appeal for $250,000,000.

Special Cables to The Jewish News •
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The Haganah and the Irgun signed an agreement placing the *extrem-
ists' forces under the command of Haganah. Negotiations are reported proceeding to include
the Stern Group in the unified defense set up, but no decision has been reached. *.
Under the agreement, the Irgun retains its own forces, but it will refrain from separate
operations and obey the orders of the Haganah Supreme Command which, incidentally, has an-
nounced the opening of a military college with 200 students. The agreement shOuld have the
effect of cutting down' attacks on tropps and police, since it bars the Irgun from attacking British
or the Arabs.
The Haganah-Irgun unity comes after more than a year of desultory negotiations—which
were broken off on several occasions—and under the pressure of increasing Arab attacks,.
which today cost the life of a. top Agency official and nearly resulted in the death of Mrs.
Goldie Meyerson, Agency political chief, in Jerusalem.
A convoy was attacked before dawn Monday near Rosh Pinah. Tel-Litwinsky Military
Camp was attacked by "Arabs in battle dress," the attackers penetrating the camp and stealing
a quantity of arms after a fight in which one s.oldier was killed and two wounded. Three other
soldiers were wounded in Jerusalem by an Arab who was captured after a chase by a Jewish
policeman.
A Haganah broadcast tells 'of two punitive attacks on Arab villages from which ; Jews traveling
on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem road were attacked.
Indiscriminate firing by British soldiers killed a Jewish woman in the Jerusalem Old City.
An "Arab national committee" of Haifa has has called on all Arabs to return to work and
to halt individual acts of terror against Jews:
Hans Beyt, head of the Agency's youth immigration department, was killed when. a Tel
Aviv-Jerusalem - convoy was attacked by Arabs near Mount Castel. Mrs. Meyerson, i who was
travelling in the same convoy, was grazed by a bullet and her bodyguard, Haganah Warrant Officer
,Abraham Filman, was seriously wounded. Itzhak Gruenbaum, executive member, who was
travelling with Mrs. Meyerson was uninjured, although several others were wounded. Another
, Tel Aviv-Jerusalem convoy was attacked at Babel and several passengers were wounded, while
two Jews - were wounded when their vehicles were attacked in Upper Galilee.
Last week, David Ben-Gurion narrowly escaped death in an Arab attack.
A Haganah unit attacking an Arab position on the road between Haifa and Kiriat Eliahu lost
its commander,.. Joseph. Bardas, 22 when ..it was. rnietjy withering fire. The second-in-command

UN Commissioners
LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA)—Sen-
ator Vinceniee Francisco, majority
floor leader of the Philippine Sen-
ate, has been named by his govern-
ment to the UN Implementation
Commission on Palestine.
The Czechoslovak delegation in-
dicated that Karel Lisicky, former-
ly a member of UNSCOP, would
definitely be named as the Czech
delegate. Eduardo Morgan and Per
Federspiel, of Panama and Den-
mark, respectively, have 'already
been appointed, and Bolivia is the
only country which has yet to name
its delegate.
Tel Aviv's Security
Guarded by Jews
-
Withdrawal of British troops from
Tel Aviv has placed the all-Jewish
city, with a population ,of 250;000,
in complete control of Jewish po-
lice and Haganah. The accompany-
ing photograph (on the right) shows a
Jewish policeman (left) and a mem-
ber of Haganah taking to the Tel
Aviv jail an 'Arab who was caught
brandishing a dagger.
A Haganah spokesman reports
that many delegations from various
Arab villages have been coming into
the Jewish settlements asking the
Jews not to attack them since they
are not responsible for attacks on
Jews, which they assert are made by
bands of 'Arabs from outside Pales-
tine. The 'spokesman added that
Palestine Arabs have been taking a
very small part in the anti-Jewish
disturbances, which he pointed out
have been conducted chiefly by
Syrians resident in the country and,
recently, also by a contingent of
several hundred gunmen 'who have
infiltrated into Palestine.
