Page Fourteen THE JEWISH NEWS New Meanings for 'DP' Detroit Women Tell Reaction To Impressive UJA Parley ORT Games Party Jan. 12 By MRS. ROBERT S. DREWS From Dec. 12 to 15, five Detroit women—leaders in our community—were in Atlantic City. They were not there to seek pleasure—they were there to seek new goals of endeavor for a great cause—United Jewish Appeal. This was not their first attendance at a national confer- ence—but "something" had transformed this one into a new experience—the stance of the speakers appeared to be firmer, the note of their voices seemed to be the song of the Homeland, their goal for the cause was greater. That "something" was Palestine—and the Jewish State. Writers, orators, news com- mentators and workers had at one time or another referred to "DP" as Displaced Persons, De- layed Pilgrims, Destination Pales- tine—but to these women it had been given an added significance —"DETROIT PLEDGES." Mrs. Max R. Frank, president of the Women's Division of the Jewish Welfare Federation, stat- ed: "We realize there was a dif- ference in the atmosphere. For so many years we seemed to be in the depths of a bottomless, dark pit—but now we can see the daylight, its rays leading us on • our way. Only the money that we Jews in America will give will put this state in the category of all free, democratic nations. When all displaced Jews will have a new life in Palestine, self-sup- porting and self-reliant, a pride to all Jews everywhere, then we will have become a constructive force in world. statesmanship." Mrs. John C. Hopp, chairman of the Women's Committee on Campaign Structure, to whom "DP" has another additional meaning, "DETROIT PLAN S" stated: "I was deeply impressed with the enthusiasm of the people who were eager to give, and the democratic manner in which the sessions were conducted. These sessions were led by important, prominent men from all parts of the country, whose thoughts and energies were concentrated on the promotion of the aims of a great cause. I was convinced that the workers of Detroit's Women's Di- vision are _equal, if not superior, to those of other large com- munities throughout the country, but we must follow Boston's suc- cessful plan—See and contact a lot more people.' We have lost no time—we have already form- ulated plans for our 1948 Allied Jewish Campaign." Mrs. Abe Kasle remarked: "I was moved by the selflessness of those attending the conference, in dedicating themselves to bring succor and hope into the lives of thousands and thousands of our people. I felt humble in the presence of UJA's great leaders." Esther R. Prussian, director of the Detroit Service Group, also attended the conference. K. Palman Donates Hebrew Library With funds provided by K. Pal- loan, in memory of his wife, Brocha Palman, a nook of Pales- tinian Hebrew books has been established at the Rose Sittig Cohen Branch of the United He- brew Schools.
