Torah Scholarship
Drive at Shaarey
Zedek Progressing
Mrs. Meyer Shugerman, pledge
chairman of the Shaarey Zedek
Sisterhood Torah Scholarship
Fund, was hostess to members of
her committee at a luncheon at
her home Dec. 10. Mrs. Carl
Schiller, general chairman, pre-
sided. Enthusiastic reports were
given by the various chairmen.
Mrs. Louis J. Tobin, speaking
for special gifts, said that "every
effort is being made to complete
our pledge to the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary by raising the
sum of $9,000 we need towards
the $21,500 fellowship." She
urged increases in contributions
to $25 or more and in that way
help to eliminate another drive.
Mrs. Morris Adler, guest speak-
er, declared that the Torah fund
"is our opportunity to prove our
appreciation to our Rabbis, who
gave of their services so will-
ingly. To Rabbi Hershman, who
guided the congregation for near-
ly 40 years and to. Rabbi Adler.
The seminary where they were
ordained. is the beacon light that
reaches our young with Jewish
influence and we must help the
institution to replenish our lead-
ership."

Ruskin and Morris Halperin were
appointed in charge of the social
committee for the Feb. 3 lunch-

JNF Dedicates Book
In Honor of the UN
NEW YORK—A Sefer Ha'Me-
dina, the Book of the Jewish
State, dedicated to the decision
of the United Nations, has been
opened at the headquarters of the
Jewish National Fund in Jerusa-
lem to perpetuate the historic
event. Groups and individuals
throughout the world have been
invited to fill the Sefer Ha'Medina
pages with inscriptions of tribute
to the nations and leaders whose
support made possible the de-
cision to reconstitute the Jewish
State.
Announcement of the creation
of the Sefer Ha`Medina was
made by Dr. Abraham Granov-
sky, head of the Keren Kayemeth
Leisrael in Jerusalem, in a cable
to Judge Morris Rothenberg,
president of the JNF of America.
Inscriptions commemorating the
event may be entered on the basis
of contributions of $100 to the
Fund for the acquisition of land
in Palestine as national property.
Elias M. Epstein, head of the
overseas department of Jewish
National Fund headquarters in
Jerusalem, arrived here from
Palestine. Mr. Epstein will attend
the national conference of the
Jewish National Fund to be held
in Chicago Jan. 2-5.
To Tour U. S. for
Jewish Cavalcade
DR. LEO BAECK of London,
president of the World Union for
Progressive Judaism, will arrive
in the U. S. Jan. 1, to begin a three
months' tour under auspices of the
American Jewish Cavalcade. Dr.
Baeck, outstanding leader of the
German Jewish community, was
imprisoned by Adolf Hitler for
several years in the infamous
T h e r e s i e nstadt concentration
camp. He comes to this country
to participate in the nationwide
religious revival program spon-
sored by the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations.

On account of the approach
of the Christmas and New Year
holidays, there will be an in-
evitable delay in mail deliver-
ies. Our readers therefore are
urged to mail early and prefer-
ably to bring their copy to the
office of The Jewish News on
Mondays. There are indications
that a great deal of copy may
reach us too late for publication
in the issues for which they
are intended.
Relief Packages May Now
Be Sent to Soviet Russia
Twenty-two pound packages of
relief supplies may now be sent
to Russia with duty and other
charges prepaid in this country,
according to the proprietors of
the Reliable Package Service,
8917 Linwood.
The firm is now prepared to
send packages to all European
countries, as well as to DP camps
in Italy and Germany. Prepara-
tions are being made for shipment
of Passover packages to all parts
of the world.

Mizrachi Observes
UN Victory Dec. 20
Members of Mizrachi and their
friends will gather this Saturday,
8:30 p.m , at Congregation Bnai
Moshe, Dexter at Lawrence, to
celebrate the re-establishment of
Judea by the United Nations.
Pavel Slavensky Frelich, can-
tor of Northwest Congregation,
will be the guest artist.
Rabbi Isaac Stollman, national
Mizrachi leader and president of
the Central Mizrachi Region, will
be the guest speaker.
Morris Snow, president of Con-
gregation Bnai Zion, Isadore Sos-
nick, chairman of membership,
and other officers of the congre-
gation are enrolling the entire
membership in the Mizrachi or-
ganization. Other synagogues are
showing their intention of fol-
lowing the mass membership en-
rollment of Congregations Mish-
kan Israel and Bnai Zion.
Philip Stollman, chairman of
the Shkolim campaign of Miz-
rachi, together with Sol Crinitz
are organizing a city-wide drive
for the coming week to sell
Shkolim.

Plan New Year's Fete
The combined efforts of the
Beth Aaron Congregation, Men's
Club and Sisterhood are directed
toward their New Year's Eve ,
celebration, according to Mrs.
Rae Rubin, chairman. The party
will be held Dec. 31 at the syna-
gogue, Wyoming at Thatcher.
A catered dinner, dancing,
prizes and entertainment are
planned. Reservations must be

Members and friends of Yeshi-
vath Beth Yehudah and parents
of pupils, filled the Mogen Abra-
ham 'synagogue, Dec. 9, at the
Hanukah festival and Semi-An-
nual meeting.
The evening's program was
opened with the blessing of the
candles by the students' choir.
Rabbi M. J. Wohlgelernter, pres-
ident of the Yeshivah, presided.
Rabbi Leizer Levin, member of
the Vaad Hachinuch (Board of
Education) of Beth Yehudah,
outlined the educational setup
in the Yeshivah. Morris Snow,
treasurer, presented the financial
statement for the six-month pe-
riod ending Nov.' 30, 1947, show-
ing an income of $72,875. And an
expense of $70,064. The operat-
ing surplus for the period of $2,-
811. was utilized to clear up a
part of the salary arrears due to
members of the faculty.
The meeting concluded with
the address by Rabbi Irwin Gor-
don, director of Hillel Fotmda-
tion at Wayne University.
