Page Six Friday, December 19, 1947 THE JEWISH NEWS Detroit's SOS Drive Tops 850 Cities In Nation 1,465 Volunteers Collect and Pack Supplies for Overseas Survivors Recapitulating the outstandingly successful SOS Drive in Detroit, the weary but happy SOS committee, headed by Fred M. Butzel, honorary chairman, and Mandell Berman, campaign direc- tor, finds that enthusiastic De troiters contributed more than a half million pounds of desperately- needed Supplies for Overseas Survivors in the all- community collection Sunday, Dec. 7 and a "mop- up" drive Sunday, Dec. 14. The committee members celebrated the dis- patch of nearly a half dozen freight cars to New York with a victory dinner last week, attended by Helen Alpert, Mandell Berman, Mrs. Henry Fechhiemer, Lawrence Fleischman, Barb a r a Greenberg, Jewell Klein, Charles Levin, Goldie Levinstein, Mitchell Mandeberg, Theodore Man- dell, Dr. Martin Naimark, Norman Naimark, Corinne Perlis, Mrs. Helen Singer, William Shapiro, Charles Wetsman and Sol J. Schwartz. • Speaking in behalf of the entire committee, Berman said, "We want to express our thanks to the hundreds of people who helped us put this drive over the top. We can't reach everyone with an individual thank-you, because the spirit of the SOS became so enthusiastic that a lot of people came down spontaneously to help and we don't have their names. However, there are 1,465 peo- ple who rate a sincere thanks from the Committee —510 drivers,-250 jumpers, 50 truck drivers, 315 truck jumpers, 40 dispatchers, 40 assistant dis- patchers and at least 260 warehouse personnel." Listed for special acknowledgment were the men's organizations, women's organizations, Sun- day schools, youth organizations, donors of trucks and others who provided equipment, photographs and warehouse space. (See below.) "We also want to mention our Christian neigh- bors who showed true fellowship, not only in con- tributing, but in pitching in to work" Berman said. He described particularly one driver whose list of families contained 19 non-Jews. Every single one of these families gave, and gave generously," he added, "and they gave with an understanding of the importance of the drive to people overseas." Congratulatory telegrams from SOS leaders in New York and throughout the country mention that Detroit has done the outstanding job of the year, putting this community at the top of the list of 850 communities participating in the drive. Last year, Detroit was fifth in the ranks. Silverberg; No. 421, Gerald Sampson; No. 146, Joseph Lattin; Jewish Com- munity Center, Yeshuda Rosenman and Morton Goodman; Habonim, Arthur Leibick.
