A Jewish Highwayman

DR. WALTER C. LOWDERMILK, who will speak under auspices
of the Detroit Chapter, American Technion Society, Jan. 10, at the
Statler Hotel, examines a map of Palestine and Transjordan.
Scientists and technologists have a special, historic interest in

Jewish Palestine,- since the foundations of science and technology
were laid in the Middle East, says Dr. Walter C. Lowdermilk, author
of the Jordan Valley Authority Plan for Palestine. Former assistant
chief of the U. S. Conservation Service, Dr. Lowdermilk will address
the Detroit Chapter of the American Technion Society Saturday
evening, Jan. 10, at the Hotel \'.%
Statler, on "Palestine—Haven for sources of Palestine, the Tech.-
nion will carry on research in
Millions of Settlers."
Writing in the 1947 Yearbook, applying natural forces to ma-
chines and training young people
published by the Society, Dr. for industrial enterprises and ac-

This is the story of a Jewish
highwayman. This particular
Jew had always been a plain and
humble worker—very poor. He
had been content to go along this
way for many years, but all of
a sudden, he became ambitious.
He would be a highwayman,
nothing less.
So he picked up one of his
wife's big knives and went out
on a lonely road, to wait for his
first customer.
Pretty soon a man came along.
"Sholom Aleichem," said the
highwayman. "I want to tell you
that this is a holdup, and unless
you give me all your money right
away, I'll take this knife and
carve you up like a chicken."
"Yes," said the man, "let me
see you do something!"
The Jewish highwayman real-
ized he must act quickly. He ex-
tended his arm with the knife
in it, then paused a moment look-
ing at the knife. "0 God," he
said, "I can't do anything. It's a
`milchige' knife."

Jews in Arab Lands Pressed
To Support War on Partition

HE

CAIRO, (JTA) — Jews in the Arab countries in the
Middle East are being subjected to steadily increasing official
and unofficial pressure to support the Arab states war on
partition of Palestine.
Hundreds of Bagdad Jews are said to have "volunteered"
to enlist in the anti-Zionist military forces which are report-
edly formed. Large contributions

to the fund to finance warfare in
Palestine have been made by
Iraqi, Syrian and Lebanese Jews.
The Jews in Lebanon have con-
tributed $25,000, while the Bag-
dad Jews have given even larger
sums estimated in Bagdad pa-
pers to exceed $2,000,000.
The Jews in Egypt were called
upon to contribute "generously"
to the "Save Palestine Fund" es-
tablished by the Arab League. The
call was issued by the youth sec-
tion of the Cairo Moslem Al Az-
har University, the Council of El-
ders of which has proclaimed a
"holy war" against the Jews in
Palestine.
Aga Khan Offer
Reuters reported that the Aga
Khan of India, considered the
richest man in the world, has in-
formed Emir Ismail Suleiman,
head of the Ismailite sect in Syria,
that he would contribute $120,-
000,000 worth of gold for the "re-
demption" of all of Palestine, if
the UN did not deviate from its
partition decision.
Reuters also reported that the
headquarters of the Arab League
received about 3,000 offers from
veterans in the U. S. to serve in
Arab units against the Jews of

That's what Jim said after the first meal on our new
electric range. And he's right. Postwar electric
ranges are a vast improvement over older models.
Ovens are better insulated. Heating units are more
efficient. That means even faster cooking ... lower cost.

Stricken Aden Community
Appeals For Assistance

NEW YORK, (JTA) — An ap-
peal for monetary and other as-
sistance to the Jewish community
of Aden, where scores of Jews
have been killed by rioting Arabs
during the past 10 days, has been
received by the World Jewish
Congress headquarters.
In a cable signed "The Aden
Jewish Sufferers," it is stated that
Arab mobs, including native
troops, burned down two syna-
gogues and the community's only
two schools, as well as pillaged
and burned nearly every Jewish-
owned shop and killed or wound-
ed many Jewish men, women and
children. If it were not for Bri-
tish troops "in transit," the cable
said, the "whole Aden Jewry
would have been wiped out."
The Congress cabled the British
Foreign Office and the British
governor of Aden, Sir Reginald
Stuart Champion, and called on
them to take "all necessary pre-
cautions to avoid repetition • of
riots and to rush supplies for the
homeless and destitute Jews from
the nearest supply depots."

You save extra time, too, with the automatic control
that starts and stops your range by itself. Why, you
can go shopping all day and have supper ready to serve
when you return. And there's no heating up the
kitchen . . . no soot or smoke to bother about.

These easy-to-use electric ranges are
in stock right now at your local
dealers. Be snot to see them soon.
