Ban on Christmas
Carols Is Revoked

Weds Detroiter

NEW YORK, (JPS)—A Christ-
mas letter sent to all officials of
New York public schools by Su-
perintendent of Schools, William
Jansen, revokes the recent ban-
ning of certain Christmas carols
in twenty-three Brooklyn public
schools.
The letter was sent out by Dr.
Jansen immediately after Assist-
ant Superintendent of Schools
Isaac Bildersee ordered the prin.-,
cipals of twenty-three schools in
his two districts of Brooklyn to
prohibit Christmas carols or
songs with a particularly reli-
gious significance and also to pro-
hibit the use of symbols and re-
ferences to Hanukah in holiday
celebrations at the schools.
Dr. Jansen, in his' letter, left
it to "the good judgment of the
principal, the teachers and the
participants" to determine the
holiday program. He added that
"it is expected, as always, the
principle of religious worship will
be respected."

lhspatcli of Violence

In reading the news dispatches from Palestine, watch the "evil
triangle"—Nablus, Tul Karem and Jenin, three towns that were the
center from which the Mufti gangs operated against the Yishuv in
1936-39. Jews warned the British that these three towns were en-
gaged in assiduously accumulating weapons, but this did not discon-
cert the British, nor were they disturbed by reports that the Mufti
gang leaders had their headquarters there. Now, according to latest
reports from Palestine, the British have decided to arm an Arab
"security force" recruited from Nablus when they withdraw from
that region. The Jews will not be provided with arms, they will
have to shift for themselves, but the notorious Nablusers will be
properly equipped. These towns, incidentally, are very conservative
ones—women are driven out as harlots for unveiling their faces;
married couples are beaten by townsmen if husband and wife are
caught - sitting together in movie-houses, for the religious conserva-
tives insist on a women's auxiliary in the cinema.
The Mufti's death list is said to include now Dr. Haikal, Mayor
of Jaffa, who sued for peace with Tel Aviv; Dr. Bustani, chief of the
Arab League Against Anti-Semitism; the Mufti's own adjutant on
the Arab Higher Executive, Hilmi Pasha, who refused to join his
colleagues at a conference with the Mufti in Beyrut. Even the fate
of Dr. Khalidi, spokesman for the Arab Higher Committee during
Jamal Husseini's absence from Jerusalem, is uncertain. He is a
prisoner of the Arab Higher Committee, knowing that were he to
refuse his role, a bullet would write finis to his life. All these men—
and they are representative of large segments of Palestine's Arab
population—are waiting for the UN Commission to come to Palestine
and arrange some form of protection for them, for they know that
some sections of Britain's officialdom in Palestine have been reas-
suring the Mufti that he can act with impunity against his political
opponents, and not a single representative of the mandatory has
taken any steps to give his opponents the protection every man is
entitled to in a civilized land.
Haganah has arranged on its own for the protection of entire
regions where Arab villagers live at peace with the Jews - and want
to continue living so. • You soon will hear of mutual defense agree-
