Delegates From 123 Organizations Resolve to Make United
Jewish Appeal Supreme Effort in 1948 and to Double
Activation for Palestine Land Purchases

More than 400 delegates, representing 123 Congregations,
landsmanshaften, social and educational groups and Zionist
organizations, meeting all day Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Detroit-
Leland Hotel, unanimously went on record to make the forth-
coming United Jewish Appeal for a national goal of $250,-
000,000 the major objective of the Jewish community, and

urged the doubling of efforts in 4,
support of traditional collections
for the Jewish National Fund, the
Zionist land redemption agency.
Held • under auspices of the
Jewish National Fund Council
of Detroit, the conference was
marked by an impressive out-
burst of enthusiasm from the
gathering which filled the hall to
capacity at both the morning and
afternoon sessions.
One of the major resolutions
dopted by the conference rep-
resented a call to action to
synagogues and organizations
who were urged to support the
traditional JNF efforts—boxes,
tree-planting, inscriptions in
the Golden Book and the new
projects—Sefer HaMedinah, Se-
fer Ha Yeled and Sefer Bar
Mitzvah. The synagogues were
urged to increase their previous
activities, and the organizations
were ,especially called upon to
cooperate in placing boxes in
all Jewish homes and in se-
lecting special JNF commit-
tees within their groups for
support of land redemption
activities.
Other resolutions acclaimed the
Zionist leaders who labored for
a favorable solution by the UN
as well as President Truman, the
U, S. delegation to the UN and
all UN leaders who helped bring
about a favorable verdict
Although the conference did
not adopt a quota for the JNF,
the delegates were, asked to
double the income of the current
year—which was reported as
$129,000.
A message to the Yishuv, adopt-
ed by the conference, pledged
the loyalty of this community
to the Palestine settlers in their
battle for freedom and com-
mended the Palestinian - ,Jews
for their heroism. The confer-
ence stated in its message to
the Yishuv that all implements
for the building of the Jewish
state will be provided and that,
whenever necessary, American
Jews will provide implements
for the Yishuv's self-defense.
Rabbi Wolf Gold, world Miz-
rachi leader, in his principal ad-
dress, which lasted 105 minutes,
stirred the audience with his
resume of happenings before the
UN. He asserted that Jewry seeks
peace but that it will do all in
its power to stop aggression. He
expressed confidence that the
Jewish state will succeed, that
the Arab rioting will end and that
there will 'be no cause for fear.
He announced that he was leav-
ing this week for Palestine.
William Hordes and Irving W.
Schlussel, chairman of the board
and president of the JNF Council

afternoon sessions respectively.
