At Detroit Celebration

Shaarey Zedek Men's Club Lecture Transformed into Zionist
Demonstration Welcoming UN Decision for
Establishment of Jewish State

More than 3,000 persons filled to
capacity every available hall and
assembly room of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek on Dec. 3, at the
impressive demonstration of De-
troit Jewry celebrating 'the UN
decision for the establishment of
the Jewish state in Zion.
Loud speakers were installed
in the social hall and the chapels
for the overflow audiences to
hear the stirring address of Dr.
Stephen S. Wise, president of the
American Jewish Congress, who
later also appeared before the
large crowd in the social hall.
Originally' arranged by the
Men's Club of Shaarey Zedek,
the - meeting was thrown open to
the public and the. Zionist Coun-
cil joined in sponsoring the rally.

Introductory Remarks

Prior to Dr. Wise's address,
there were introductory remarks
by Albert Green, president of the
Men's Club, and Harry Shulman,
president of Shaarey Zedek. Ben-
jamin M. Laikin, as president of
the Zionist Council, thanked th.p
Jewish community for the sup-
port it gave in the battle of as-
suring Jewish rights. Cantor J.
H. Sonenklar chanted the Psalm
"When the Lord returned the
captivity of Zion, we were like
dreamers . . ." Rabbi Morris
Adler, who introduced Dr. Wise,
read the Psalm:
Dr. Wise opened his address
by leading the assembly in the
chanting of the "shehecheyanu."
He was presented with a large"
bouquet of flowers by Mrs.
Morris Mendelsbn, in behalf of
the Detroit section of American
Jewish Congress.
Reviews Zionist History
Reviewing the history of the
Zionist movement beginning with
the Dreyfus trial and the publi-
cation of Herzl's "Jewish State,"
Dr. Wise saluted Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann as his candidate for first
president of the new Jewish state.
He paid tribute to the outstand-
ing Christian and Jewish leaders
who helped in the great Zionist
efforts and quoted the late Presi-.
dent Wilson, Lord Balfour and
Theodor Herzl whose prophecies
that a Jewish state would be
established in Palestine have ma-
terialized. -
