The Maccabaean Spirit Lives On P.

Palestine's young Maccabees celebrate the Hanukah miracle of old
and the great events of the new Feast of Dedication w i t . h song and
music. The Maccabaean spirit live s on to guide world Jewry.

Defying all obstacles, leaders of the Jewish'
Agency for Palestine and all factions in the Zionist
movement asserted this week that unprecedented ef-
forts will be introduced to assure the security of the
territory set aside by the UN for a Jewish state and
to proceed with its upbuilding and resettlement.
Major projects now being planned include the
following:

1. Inauguration of a campaign to provide adequate means
of defense for Haganah, which is recognized at the -official
defense force of Palestine' Jewry.
2. Mobilization of staffs of trained workers to take over
the government of the new state when it is proclaimed of-
ficially on Oct. 1, 1948.
3. The raising of- large sums to be used for the settlement
of hundreds of thousands of displaced and dispossessed Jews
who must be taken out of DP camps in Europe.
-
The major fund-raising effort will be inaugurated this
week-end in Atlantic City by the United . Jewish Appeal. Its
two major agencies - which are to be concerned with large-
scale settlement of Jews in Palestine and the creation of
means for their subsistence—the building of homes, the ex-
pansion of educational and health agencies, the creation of
industries and the development of colonies—are expects 4.
to ask for a minimum of 8250,000,000 in order to carry out the
absolutely necessary - activities necessitated by tre-1111 —de-
cision.
In the event the UJA decides on a $250,000,000 goal for
1948, the Detroit quota would . have to be established at -ap-
proximately $8,110,000. Last year the UJA goal was $170,000,-
000 and Detroit's quota was $5,335,000. N
Arab threats, meanwhile, are causing considerable
anxiety in Jewish ranks, but the concerted efforts of the
Jewish communities are aimed at avoiding panic and at as-
suring a spirit of confidence and faith that all obstacles can
and will be overcome. The death of approximately 100 Jews
in the first 10 days of renewed troubles and the actionof the
Arab League in seeking to destroy the foundation of the Jew-
ish state have solidified world Jewry and, for the first time,
there is evidence of a totally unified effort to achieve 'a goal
that has received the endorsement of the nations of the world.
