Philomathic Members
To Compete for Place
On Banquet Program
Next week, Bernard Edelman,
head of the real estate firm bear-
ing his name, will celebrate the
Philomathic Debating Club has
elected six members to compete
for the honor of appearing on the
program of the organization's
golden jubilee banquet Feb. 22.
The six will compete in Philo-
mathic's annual oratorical con-
test, which will be held late in
January.
Winners of first and second
places in the contest will be
awarded gold and silver medals
and will stage an oratorical-type
debate at the banquet, according
to Jack Driker, Philomathic
speaker.
Alumni and members at the
banquet will then select a final
winner, who will receive a tro-
phy. The event is to be the high-
light of a program commemorat-
ing the 50 years of the club's ex-
istence in Detroit.
Elected as contestants were
Jack Alspector, Elliot Beitner,
Maynard Gordon, Joel Guttentag,
Sheldon Klimist and Seymour
Raimi. Ray Gottlieb is an alter-
nate.

Buried Sunday
With Military Rites
Large numbers of relatives and
friends gathered last Sunday to
pay final tribute to Pfc. Lawrence
Herzberg, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Alick Herzberg, of 2050 Calvert,
who was killed in action Dec. 26,
1944, during the battle of the
Bulge.
Funeral services for Pfc Herz-
berg, who was 20 years old, were
held at Lewis Bros. Memorial
Chapel. Rabbi Morris Adler offi-
ciated. One hundred and fifty
members of the Rosenwald Post
of the American Legion conduct-
ed military rites. Burial was at
Machpelah Cemetery.
A graduate of Central High
School, Pfc. Herzberg attended
Wayne University before enlist-
ing in the Army. He was speaker
of the Philomathic Debating So-
ciety, and was affiliated with Pi
Tau Sigma fraternity at Wayne.
In addition to his parents, he is
survived by two sisters, Mrs.
George Meyerson and Mrs. Joe
Cohen.
