By =RUTH MIRIAM LEVINE
Modern techniques of progressive education, with em-
phasis on opportunity for creative expression, are used to
carry out the curriculum of the Sholom Aleichern Folk School.
An institution of 20 years standing in this city;the
SchoOl is a community-wide project. Moshe Haar, its director,
emphasizes that the Folk School has no organizational affilia-

Haar explained: From- the begin-
ning, Yiddish is the language of
the classroom. The vocabulary is
controlled and varied, so that the
children a-cquire a working
knowledge of some 300 words in
a year.
The kindergarten groups meet
mornings and afternoons. Ele-
mentary classes are held after
public school hours Monday
through Thursday, and Friday
afternoon is devoted to a special
pre-Sabbath program. Saturday
mornings the children meet for
dramatic and dancing_ sessions. In
addition, 30 children are enrolled
in after-school classeS at the
Brady Public School.
Observe Holidays
Religious ideology is not in-
cluded in the Sholom Aleichem
curriculum, Haar stated. Sabbath
and holiday observances are con-
ducted from a special Siddur
which contains selected excerpts
from the Bible, modem Jewish
literature, the Sayings of the
Fathers and Yiddish and Hebrew
songs. In addition, the Sabbath
observance includes the lighting
of the candle's, refreshments and
regular collections for charity—
through which the children learn
the Jewish tradition of Tzedakah.
"We 'try to show them all that
is beautiful in the traditions of
Judaism," the director empha-
sized, adding that prayer is taught
as an individual expression, with
the children being given the op-
portunity to compose their own
prayers.
"The Institute is supported par-
tially by the children's tuition
fees and by an appropriation from .
the Jewish Welfare Federation.
The remainder of its budget is
covered by contributions from
members of the community.
