How World Jewry Reacted to UN Decision:

New Judean State Has Army of 80,000;):
given British Soldiers Help Celebrate Event

- Every conceivable gathering of Jews throughout the world was con-
verted into a" demonstration of joy over the UN decision on Palestine, since
:last Saturday night. Individuals and organizations celebrated the event .
and gave thanks to the President ,of the United States, to the leaders of
the United Nations and to the Jewish leaders who labored to make real
the hope for the re-creation of Jewish statehood. .
Newspapers throughout the land reported their phones Were tied, up for
hours by callers who wanted to know the, result of the UN vote. Long dis-
tance phones were busy, relatives and friends calling one another to ex-
change congratulations on the great event, and the telegraph offices were •
flooded with telegrams of greetings.
President Truman was congratulated by national organizations and by
individuals.
There were scores of house parties in Detroit, and the dinner of Arlaz-
aroff JNWA branch on Sunday - night, hailed the great event. There was a.
labor Zionist celebration at -their Institute on Saturthy night.
Prior to the important announcement, --prayers were uttered in syna-
gogues throughout the world, expressing the hope the UN would be guided
towards the right soloution. Chief Rabbi Herzog of Palestine had issued a
call for prayer to world Jewry. The moment the announcement came from
Flushing Meadows, the 'tension eased and the spirit of jubilation was mixed

with solemn affirmations that Jewry now-must dedicate itself to complete
-fulfillment of-the hope for the redemption of Zison. •
The news of sporadic Arab attacks which resulted in the death of 14
Jews on Sunday and Monday did not frighten Ainerican Jews. On the
contrary, there were indications that they strengthened. Jewish unity. Con-
fidence in the Haga.nah prevailed and everywhere, there is hope that. Arabs
and Jews will live peacefully together in the two new neighboring states.
News that a force of 80,000 Palestine Haganah members are prepared to
defend the 'new Judea was heartening to all celebrating gatherings. There
was jubilation also- over the announcement that, on the eve of the momen-
tous _decision, 1,400 children and their parents arrived in Haifa from
Cyprus.
News of the great verdict by the UN was greeted with joy by hundreds
of thousands of Palestinian Jews. In Jerusalem, Tel Aiv and Haifa, British
Tommies joined with Jews in celebrating the event by dancing the flora
together.
In the corridors of the UN assembly-hall at Flushing, a rabbi echoed the
sentiments of the thousands who gathered there by reciting the_prayer "Ze
hayom asah hasher, nagilah ve-nismecha vo"---"This is the day
y-the Lord
hath .created! Let us rejoice in it and be glad!"

Dr. Chaim Weizmann Earns Right
To Be Judea's First President

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, eldest
statesman in Zionism, is being ac-
claimed'as the first citizen of the
new Judea and as the man who
has earned the right to be the
first president of the new Jewish
state.
At the sessions of the American
Jewish Conference in Chicago,
last week-end, Dr. Stephen S.
Wise declared:
- "I salUte Chaim Weizmann as
-the first president of the Republic
of Judea."
Presidents Hailed
_ Dr: Wise hailed the help that
was given. by President Truman .
in' securing a favorable UN de-
cision - and paid tribute to the
groundwork that was laid, by the
late Justice Louis D. Brandeis,
the late President Roosevelt and
• the pioneering efforts of Presi-
dent Wilson and Lord Balfour.
Palestine, Dr. Wise declared, "is
to be free and democratic. It• is
to be Jewish with neighborliness
for all people. There never will
be a quota for students in the
Hebrew University and Arabs are
as free to attend it as Jews. And
the Jews of the world are not to
dictate to Palestine Jewry what
sort of state they are to set up."

to him: "I shall hot live to see the
Jewish state, but you will."

At national labor Zionist gath-
erings, and at convention of the
Gewerkshoften, the name of Dr.
Weizmann was projected over the
week-end as the only one to be
considered for the honor of being
Judea's first president.
On the day on which the Ad
Hoc UN Palestine Committee
adopted. the Palestine report by
a vote of 25 to 13, Dr. Weizman
was honored by 2,000 persons at
a dinner at Waldorf-Astoria Ho-
tel, New York, arranged by the
American Committee for the
WeizmarM Institute in Palestine,
the eminent leader was halied as
the "first ;president of the new
JewiSh state" by Abraham Fein-
berg, chairman of the committee.

His Dream Comes True

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Dr. A. H.
Silver, Emanuel Neumann, Dr.
Stephen S. Wise—hailed the news
as marking a new milestone in
Jewish history.'
The Synagogue Council of
America issued a statement wel-
coming the decision.
State Department Vindicated
Joseph M. Proskauer, president
of the American Jewish Commit-
tee, declared that the approval of
a Jewish state was a "vindicatic.
of the wisdom, skill and energy of
the American delegation and • of
our State Department."
He said: "In the statement of
views of the American Jewish
committee, issued Jan. 31, 1943,
it was stated Since we hold that
in the 'U. S.; as in all other. coun-
tries, Jews, like all others of their
citizens, are nationals of those
nations and of no other, there
can be no political identification
of Jews outside of Palestine with
whatever governMent there may
be instituted.' That principle is
axiomatic."
Discordant Notes
However, in the general Jew-
ish rejoicing which followed upon
the historic UN decision, there
were some discordant notes from
some Jewish leaders. Meir Gross-
man, president of the United
Zoinists-Revisionists or America,
...described the partition decision as
"clearly unjustifiable", declaring
that "it is with deep sorrow that
we received the decision of the
nited Nations to partition Pales-
tine into two states and to reduce
Jewish national 'territory from
44,000 to 5,500 square miles."
The assembly at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, Detroit, on Wed-
nesdayevening, which was sched-
uled as' a meeting with Dr.
Stephen S. Wise by the syna-
gogue's - Men's Club, was to be
transformed into a celebration by
Detroit Jewry under the joint
auspices of the Men's Club and
the Zionist Council of Detroit.
Other celebrations which will '
embrace the Christian commu-
rity will be planned by the
Zionist Council at a meeting pn
Monday evening.

"Awake, Awake and Sing a Song"

By DR. NOAH E. ARONSTANI

- (Written upon hearing the news of the UN's action in behalf of
the establishment of .a Jewish state).

0 sing my soul a song of joy,
A paean of liberty;
The time has come, the hour is here

To set my people free.
0 sing my soul a song of thanks
For sufferings sustained,
For tasks -and toil to win the soil,

For hopes that never waned.
0 sing my soul a.song of praise

To him whose pledge came true;
Unfurl the flag of David's shield,
The banner white and blue.
And set it as a stanchion
For ages yet to be;
-
And lift your voice in song again,
A song of ph*
