TEMPLE ISRAEL, Art Institute: Rabbi Leon Fram will preach 'at
8:30 . p. m. Friday, Dec. 5, on . "The United Nations Decision on
Palestine." Phillip Solomon, son of Mr/and Mrs. Samuel Solomon,
will observe his Bar Mitzvah. Mr. and Mrs. Solomon will be hosts
at the social hour. Rabbi Jerome Folkman of Columbus, 0., speaks
this Friday on "Reverie on the Stock Market." Mr. and Mrs. Sam-
uel Gale will be hosts to the congregation at the social hour in
honor of the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Michael.
NORTHWEST HEBREW CONGREGATION, Curtis at Santa Rosa:

luncheon of the Bnai David Ladies

will be used , to help equip the
synagogue. The AtixiliarY re-
cently presented a curtain for
the Ark, as well as covers for
reading desks in the synagogue.

hudah will be held at 8:30 p. m.
Tuesday, Dec. 9,"' in the Yeshivah
Building, Dexter and Cortland.
All members, donors and ,con-
tributors are invited.
Reports from 'all departments
of the school will be presented,
showing the educational progress
and expansion Of the Yeshivah
since its removal to Dexter and
Cortland five years ago.
Pupils of the Yeshivah will pre-
sent a Hanukah program, con- .
sisting of the lighting of the can-
dles, and traditional Hanukah
Zmiros.
Guest speaker wlil be Rabbi
Irwin Gordon,‘ director of the
Wayne -University Hillel Founda-
tion. Rabbi Gordon is a grad-
uate of the Yeshivah College
(1943) and the - Rabbi Isaac Elch-
anan Theological Seminary (1945)
He is assdciated with various
Zionist organizations. Since his
arrival here he has become affil-
iated with the Young Israel
movement.

Eternal Light to Air
Need for Immigration

The Eternal Light will present
a special script, "The Latecom-
ers," written by Morton Wishen-
grad at 8 a. m. Sunday, Nov. 30,
on station WW.L .
This week's dramatization was'
adapted from "Refugees in Amer-
ica," by Maurice R. Davie, chair-
man of the department of sociol-
ogy at Yale University and direc-
tor of the Study of Recent' Im-
migration from Europe.
"The Latecomers" presents a
plea to ,America, asking that this
country again open its doors to
give refuge to the victims of

Religious School
Teachers Convene

Three. States Represented
At OMt Sessions Here
This Weekend

Religious school teachers ftom
,Ohio, Michigan. and Indiana are
the guests of Temple Beth El and
Temple Israel this weekend, for
the annual Tri-State Religious
School Teachers Convention.
Sessions scheduled for Friday
include Dorothy F. Zelig's talk on
"The Religio-us School Teacher
Looks at Her Job," a luncheon, An
afternoon demonstration lesson,
to be conducted by Faye Portner,
eighth grade teacher at Temple
Beth El, and Sabbath eve serv-
ices at both Temples.
-Dr. .James A. Heller will' be
guest preacher at the Beth - El
service, while , Rabbi Jerome
Folkman will occupy the Temple
Israel -pulpit. Following services,
an Oneg Shabbat will be held at
Temple Beth El, with members
of the Sisterhoods of both Tem-
ples acting as hostesses. Cantor
Robert S. Tulman of Temple' Is-
rael and Moe Kesner. of Temple
Beth El will be soloists.
Saturday morning the delegates
•will hear a panel discussion on
"An Evaluation of Teaching Ma-
terials and Methods of Present-
ing Curriculum." The convention
will close with a luncheon at
which Rabbi Harry Essrig of
Grand Rapids will speak on "The
Teacher's Responsibility in Per-
sonality Development."
' Unless otherwise specified, all
sessions will take place at Hotel
Statler.

Northwest Sisterhood
Prepares Hanukah
Program for Dec. 3

The • next meeting of the . Sis-
terhood of the Northwest Hebrew
Congregation will be held at the
synagogue at 8:30 p. m., Wednes-
day, Dec. 3.
The program, which will be
dedicated to the Hanukah festival,
will feature the first presentation
of the Sisterhood's Dramatic
Group, "A Festival of Holidays,"
under the direction of Mrs. Ira
G. Kaufman. A leading role will
be taken by Mrs. Norman Cottler.
Mrs. Michael Galsky is in charge
of the social hour which will
follow. .
In keeping with the spirit of
Hanukah, Mrs. Joseph Gordon,
SOS chairman, urges members to
bring canned 'goods, layettes,
medical supplies and usable
clothing to this meeting.
. Arrangements are being corn-
ieted for the donor luncheon
to be given by the Sisterhood
Jan. 28. Mrs. Alex Brooks is
chairman.

To provide supplementary food,
clothing, medical care, education-
al opportunities and other wel-
fare services for the Palestine-
bound Jewish refugees on the is-
land of Cyprus, JDC is now spend-
ing at the rate of $1,000,000 a year.

New Group to Get
Charter on Monday

Young -Israel - ot. Detroit an-
nounces the formation of a new
Young Adults group to assume .a
part of the local work of the na-
tional organization.
Members and friends of the or-_
ganization, aged 18 to _ 30, are
urged to - join this group whose
function will be to permit the
xounger element in the commun-
e to share in promotion of ti\adi'-
tional orthodox Judaism.
The Young Adults will receive
the charter from the general or-
ganization at a dinner on Mon-
day, Dec. 1, when officers also
will be installed.
Main speaker of the 'evening
will be Rabbi Dr. Samson R.
Weiss, formerly of Detroit, now
national director of the National
Council of Young Israel. He will
report on the work of the nation-
al organization and on the Mid-
western convention, held
St.
Louis, over Thanksgiving week-
end.
At a meeting on Nov, 2, the fol-
lowing officers were elected for
the ensuing year: Hillel Abrams,
president, Abrahain Reichman,
vice president; Ruth Kaner, sec-
retary; Goldie Wrotslaysky, treas-
urer,
A program will follow the din-
ner. David I. Berris will act as
toastmaster. Charles T. Gellman,
president of the local organiza-
tion, will welcome the new group.
Miss Esther Rubins, vice' presi-
dent of the National Council of
Young Israel, will come from
New York to bring the greetings
of the national officers.

A notable staff of instructors is
in charge of classes at the Shaarey
Zedek Adult Institute, which
opened last week at the Chicago
and Lawton Synagogue. .
Heading the staff is Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler, rabbi of' the congrega-
tion, whose course in "Achieving
Greater Effectiveness in Jewish
Living" is an experimental labor-
atory for the discussion and ex-
periencing of Jewish values and
activities.
Rabbi Irwin Gordon, recently-
appointed director of the Wayne
University Hillel Foundation, is
teaching a course in -Bible. Rabbi
Gordon is a graduate of Yeshivah
College and the Rabbi Issac El-
chanan Theological Seminary in
New York. He is active in Bnai
Brith„ Young Israel and . Zionist
programs.
Three classes in Hebrew are
being taught by 4oseph Haggai,
Sol Panush and Mrs. Samuel
Lehrman. Haggai, a veteran
teacher at the United Hebrew
Schools, leads the advanced class,
"At Home in Hebrew."
. Panush, a UHS graduate, and
Shaarey Zedek instructor, directs
the intermediate Hebrew class,

"Attaining Greater Familiarity
with Hebrew." Mrs. Lehrman, an
experienced -public and Hebrew
school teacher, also Shaarey Zed-
ek facility member, instructs the
beginners course, "Getting Ac-
quainted with Hebrew."
An elementary course in Yid-
dish is being taught by Dr. Mov-
sas Goldoftas, prominent in Yid-
dish and Zionist circles here.
Registration for these classes,
which meet every Tuesday eve-
ning, .is still open. •

been dedicated, according to Dr.
A. L. Sachar, -chairman of the
National Hillel Foundation Corn-
mission, on the • campus of the
University of British Columbia.

2,500,000 Pounds of
Of Supplies Collected
In Fall SOS. Drive

More than 2,500,000 pounds of
food, clothing, and other relief
supplies have been collected in
the Special Fall Campaign of tire
SOS (Supplies for Overseas Sur-
vivors) Collection of the Joint
Distribution Committee, it was
announced by Mrs. Isaac "Gilman,
national SOS chairman. The
special drive for 6,000,000 pounds
of relief, supplies to tide Europe's
needy. Jews through the critical
winter months began on Sept. 25
and will continue through De-
cember.
December drives in the 850
communities cooperating iri the
SOS drive, Mrs. Gilman stated,
will be asked to concentrate on
trade and industry collections of
surplus materials, samples, re-
jects and other shopworn goods.
