Bloch. Publishing -Co. .may well
he proud of its latest product,
Prof. Meyer Waxman's "A Hand-
book of Judaism —as ProfesSed
and Practiced through the Ages."
It •is much more than "a guide
to authentic facts and infor-.
mation regarding the religious
laws and customs of Israel by an
outstanding scholar and author"
--as the - publishers have hailed
the book. It is the result of a
lifetime of research. It is the
product of devotion which already
is reflected in _Prof. Waxman's
previous books.
As indicated in his preface,
Dr. Waxman has not ignored the
doctrinal elements in his dis-
cussion- of the various subjects
in his book, and he has refrained
from playing the partisan role,
,but has rather preSented the
viewpoint mirrored in the long
history of Judaism. -
"A Handbook of Judaism" deS-
cribes the basic principles of our
faith; JudaiSm's institutions; our
festivals; "Institution of Prayer , . "
the dietary laws: the family and
its institutions; God and the
world; men and Israel in relation
to God; ethical attd • social ideals,
and contains an. important
glossary.

Denounces Name-Calling
Among. Religious Set

The practice of denunciation,
name-calling and imputation. of
- eS to any of the
unworthy mothr
religious grouPs existing in the
country today was sharply criti-
cized and a resolutiori•passed de-
ploring this tendency, at the an-
nual board of directors' meeting
of the 'National Conference of
Christians and Jews at the Hotel
Commodore in New York City.
The resolution, proposed by
Hastings Harrison, of Dallas, Tex.,
vice-president of the Conference,
pointed out that such a tendency
"only widens the gulf and leads
to lasting antagonism and bitter-
ness and makes impossible a con-
certed effort of religion for the
solution of the problems which
beset the wand today."

New York Critics Praise
Film of 'Hobson Novel
NEW YORK (JPS)--,New York
movie critics were lavish in their
praise of "Gentlemen's Agree-
ment," film adaptation of Laura
Z. Hobson's beSt-selling novel on
anti-Semitism in the United
.States. Several critics, however,
said that while the picture had
greater dramatic forcefulness
than the novel, it was still re-
stricted to the limited sphere of
Miss Hobson's observations.
