Chicago, which will be host to
the momentous Fourth Session of
the American Jewish Conference
beginning Nov. n, has played a
role in the holding of •a number of
significant gatherings, including
several large conventions dealing
with questions which arose out
of World War I. But it is not
generally known that as early
as Dec. 17, 1905, the representa-
itves of leacling central and na-
tional- Jewish organizations met
there to grapple with pressing
problems of the time.
The horrors of the Russian po-
groms of tht time occasioned the
coming together of all groups in
Jewry, but other questions also
were considered. This conclave
marked one o'f the stages in the
development of wider communal
responsibility. -
A call was issued by Adolf
Kraus, president of Bnai Brith, to
various Jewish organizations of
this country for 'a meeting for'
_ consultation, on questions affect-
ing the Jewish pebple." The -
meeting was held at the Standard
Club, Chicago, Sunday; Dec. 17,
1905. Students of recent Jewish
history would be especially inter-
ested in the list of organizations
and their representatives who
took part in this gathering. -Here
it is:

Independent Order Bnai 'Brith repre-
sented by Adolf Kraus, Chicago; J. B.
-Klein, Bridgeport, Conn., and L. L.
Solomons, San Francisco. Union of
American Hebrew Congregations, by
Simon Wolf, Washington, D. C.; Jacob
Furth, Cleveland, and Philip Stein,

Chicago. Federation of American
Zionists by E. W. Lewin-Epstein, N.

Chicago. Order Brith Abraham, by

Charities by Julian W. Mack, Chicago;

Besides adopting resolutions of
protest against tici Russian out-
rages, the Conference also took
steps relating to immigration, Eu-
ropean relief, and other urgent
matters of the time. Delegates
to the American Jewish Confer-

cast O'Dell Small, Raymond
Kaufman, Evelyn Search, Irving
Novak and Shirley Jacobson.
This melodrama will be directed
by IrVing Novak.
In addition to this dramatic
presentation, Dr. Sam Krohn,
Junior Service Group president,
will introduce Leonard Baruch,
who will welcome the veterans

About a year ago, Damon Run-
yon and Walter Winchell were
making the rounds of the police
precincts. In one, the sergeant
was bored. "Dull week," he
yawned. "No murders, no rob-
beries, no assaults, not even any
traffic violations, If it keeps on
like this, we'll be out of a job."
"Don't be so pessimistic," scrib-
bled Damon. "Things are bound
to pick up. I've still got faith in
human nature!"

One of our famed film produc-
ers was complaining about his
son's report card. "This ' is a ter-
rible report," fumed father. "Lat-

mathematics, bad; conduct, fair."
"I admit it's not up to much,
Dad," the boy responded. "But
just look at that—'Heal lth, excel-

Original fear of Columbia Stu-
dio that "The Jolson Story," be-
cause of the Jewish angle, might
do well only in large cities—par-
ticularly those with heavy Jewish
population — has definitely not
been justified. Latest evidence of
that is a report from Canada. One
Canadian houSewife saw "Jolson"
18 times and a bank manager saw
it 14 times. It played the 58,000-
population town of Regina, Sas-
katchewan, Canada, thirty-one
days during March and has had
many return engegements since.

David 0. Selznick's "Spell-

poll of Kolnoa, the cinema maga-
zine of Palestine, Ingrid Berg-

not Jewish), the film's stars, were
named top performers of the year.
Ben Hecht, who wrote the script,
also got himself a couple of me-

Q.—What does Judaism stand
for today?
A.—For the fullest freedom—
political, economic, and social—
for every individual and group,
which includes among other
things, maximal civil liberties,
trade unionism, the equality of
all; for the social use of wealth
(though whether this involves

Q.—Is there a Jewish , hier-
archy?
A.—Every congregation is alto-
gether autonomous, free to choose
its rabbi and other functionaries
and to determine policieS, large-
or small. It will, of course, be
guided by tradition; but it will
also decide for itself how the
tradition is to be construed and
the extent to which it is to be
followed. NO institutional author-
ity exists to which individual
synagogueS must render obedi-
ence. Congregations do cooperate
with one another in ad hoc or-
ganizations establisked for spe-
cific and limited purposes and
through permanent federations
based on likemindedness of view-
point and program. But all these
are v,oluntary associations, capa-
ble- of making recommendations
to their constituents but without
the least power to exact compli-
ance.

Q.—What is the meaning of the
word "Torah"?
A.—"Torah" is Hebrew noun
derived from the verb which
means "to guide" or "to teach."
Quite . simply and literally there-
fore it stands for ."guidance" or
"teaching" or, to use a word of
Latin origin, "doctrine."

Latest Palestine Gag
The latest gag going the rounds
in Palestine is as follows:
An elephant was sent to the
Tel Aviv zoo. The Hebrew word
for elephant is "peel," while the
Hebrew word for a Halutz is
"mapeel." the story is that' it is
easier for a "peel" to get into
Palestine than for a "mapeel."
